My co-worker was born and raised in Loris. To me, it's your basic little country town. It's not very big but the added plus of living there is that you are just a close drive to the North Carolina border. There are many nice areas to live as far as land and homes go.

Loris also holds the annual Bog Off festival each year. People come from all over to cook chicken bog and win a prize.

Give us more about what you expect out of an area and we could probably help you a bit more.

Loris can be seen as a lot of things, some good, some bad.. What type area do you live in now?

Thanks for your responses. Currently we live right down the road in Socastee. I've heard SO many mixed things about Loris. However, we are transplants, me from up north and my husband from another country. I just wonder what people who live there or have think. Is it really a "country" town or more of that ol' redneck kinda thing?? We have 3 children, elementary school ages. We are looking to live on some acreage and want the country town but more than that we want a community.

My brother lives there. He's a transplanted Yankee and has met and made friends with a lot of nice people there. He's very happy in Loris.

My husband and I moved into our Loris home in the spring (this year).

We love the town. Granted there is no Walmart, no Home Depot, no BIG BOX stores - but you will find a great hardware store (with PERSONAL service), 3 grocery stores (IGA, Hills, Foodlion), a Sears (appliances and such), a Radio Shack, a lovely childrens store - Little Lambs and Ivy (I hope I got this right!), a CATO's (womens clothes), an old time drug store. I could go on. The library is good. Fast food? Hardees, KFC, Maryland CHicken (never been there). There are many empty stores and warehouses, which is sad. Just recently our favorite resturant closed - The Right Recipe (great home cooked meals at a reasonable price) but a new one opened - Benjie's, which is very good! The people are laid back and friendly. (Personal note - we had a pool put in our back yard when we moved in and before the fence was put up, we had frequent visitors stopping by to check on the progress.) There are farms and fresh veggie and fruit. Can you tell I just love the town? It still has the small town feeling.

It's a 20 - 30 min drive to either Conway or North Myrtle Beach - where you can find anything that you can't find in town.

Plus Little River is close at hand, which has more entertainment, if you so desire.

Which schools do the kids in Loris attend? Are they good schools - comparable to Socastee, St. James and Carolina Forest? I realize they're all in the Horry County School District, so they should all be similar, but there are differences even within a district.

I was wondering the same thing about Loris schools. We may be purchasing a house in the Loris area. I haven't been impressed thus far with the Horry County Schools in general, outside of their special ed programs, which are phenominal. My other 2 kids have suffered tremendously education wise since moving from up north, meanwhile my special education child has blossomed.

One it's the goodold boy system here,If you want to work hard to find any, econonmy is crashing.secondly If you love animals This isnt the place for you, dead animals eeverywhere.People don't stop for them & police won't clean them up,it's a way of life here. Also look at the demos,Lastly I had to call the police one night for a break in,it took ploice 1 hr to arrive & we're minamal help. I'm not saying that it's hell but pretty close.Very run down. some good points. People are somefriendly if they take a chance to know you! That's about it,I'd give anything to go back where I came from. But one youre here, and cant get a job you lose all you have youre pretty much stuck! I hope this helps. Not to be mean or rude, But it is the truth!
