I believe you have to live here 6 months and 1 day to be considered a resident. Might be wrong but many snowbirds take advantage of many things by doing this I have been told many times. Same like in Florida.
One needs to be a resident for 12 consecutive months in SC before being able to claim residency. Everything will have to be changed over to SC as well; drivers license, car tags, proof of residing in an SC address for 1 year, etc. If the colleges here are anything like NC they'll make it a lot harder then it has to be. I had friends in school that tried to claim NC residency and it seemed to be a big pain. Obviously they want you to pay out of state tuition rather then in state.
What about the colleges down there? How long do you have to live there to be able to pay instate prices???

True....but they will work with you if you're a retired civil servant, or prove that you moved here for your child's education. Not saying they do it all the time, but the definitely do it.
