That rather surprises me. One of my former colleagues at work (we're both retired) bought a condo unit in NMB, back in early 1980, and was looking to generate a number of responsible people to rent it to, when he wasn't there. His hope was to minimize the potential damage to the place that could happen, if he used an agency that rented to the general public.

I was his first renter, going there in late spring of 1980. I asked about security, and his reply was, "Don't worry, the Police there don't put up with any crap, so crime is quite low". To my experience, over the next 20 years from that point, he was right. I never had any issues at all, during my trips there.

I'm both surprised that this downward turn has occurred, as well as somewhat disappointed to hear that, as I sometimes ponder a return there. It's been 20 years, since I was last there, and I have some very fond memories of my trips...

I would never suggest anyone from outside the area relocated in Longs on purpose.

For one thing, it's inland. It's hot. I mean really hot in the summer because there is no ocean breeze.

If you've never lived near the ocean, live near the ocean.

Seeing that NMB & Little River have the same schools you would think it would extend to beach usage ? Form what I gather it doesn’t. Only NMB get free parking.

Little River is not part of NMB...it's part of the county. Schools are county run. You'll find that the beach cities don't like county residents filling up their beaches....they want them "reserved" for tourists who spend money. Hence, free parking only for city residents.

I live in Little River and get free parking thru the City of NMB . Our neighborhood is the only non-NMB area to get this benefit .

I know exactly which neighborhood you're referring to, and your neighborhood is being joined by Bell's Lake, which has Longs mailing addresses but is within NMB city limits.

There is some free beach parking in NMB. It takes some research but eventually you can find it. It won't be as close as the paid parking but it is still close enough.

In terms of Longs, I will say that the area immediately surrounding the intersection of 905 and 9 is the part of Longs that is always in the news. Much of "Longs" that is southeast of the Waccamaw River is much better than the center of Longs. This side has NMB schools, which are some of the best in Horry County, and is much closer to stores, restaurants, and the roadways that bring you up and down the coast.
