My husband has an interview with a lumber plant in Nichols SC. It looks like there is not much there and we have an 18 year old son who would like to attend CCU. Our house is on the market here in Pa. and we are ready to move. We have been vacationing in Garden City SC since our children were young but do not know much about the inland towns. We want to be as close to beach as we can (within 30 miles). We just turned down a job in Southport NC because this job in Nichols has more to offer.
Is Nichols a reasonable drive from Longs? How are the restaurants? Which neighborhoods are best. Is it close to CCU?

Ummm Longs isn't so much a neighborhood as a cluster of houses between Myrtle Beach and Loris. With the exception of a couple of mom and pops -gas stations, a post office and a car dealership - the only other thing there is houses. You'll have to drive into North Myrtle Beach for any shopping, entertainment, etc. However Longs is right on Hwy 9 - which is a straight shot into Nichols - but it will take about 35-40 minutes each way. If you want a small town feel - Loris is further from the beach - but closer to Nichols (search the forum - we just discussed Loris somewhere) but if hubby doesn't mind the commute - I would look closer to North Myrtle Beach, Cherry Grove, Crescent Beach. Alternately - the closest big city in Marion County - where Nichols is located is Florence - which has Francis Marion College (Maybe University now).

Try Conway, depending on where you would live in Conway the commute to CCU is not that far. In fact CCU is in Conway on hwy 501. Nichols would be around a 45 minute drive but I'm not sure where your husbands lumber plant is located. Conway has stores, restaurants and a downtown area with shops, salons and cafes. Garden City is then an easy trip from 501 to 544, you can check it out on this Google map. from: nichols sc to: conway sc - Google Maps

I moved to Conway in January and love it here. It's not quite in the middle of everything but close enough to everything you need. I can email you more info about Conway if you like.
