Thanks guys. This is very helpful. I think I'm just not going to worry about the crime rate and if I find a home that I like, go for it! Have a great day all

Good idea, you can't really run from crime, it happens everywhere to some extent.

We have a condo that is in a very nice resort in the Golden Mile section of Myrtle Beach and surrounded by some extremely wealthy neighborhoods. It feels safe as can be 24/7 when we're there but a few years ago when we went to get in our car in the parking garage to head home, our trunk had been broken into and our suitcases stolen (my MIL insisted that we load the suitcases the night before and we figured it would be fine). This is a resort in an area where I would walk down the sidewalk alone at 3 am, absolutely never had a problem there before or since.

Most crimes, assuming you don't know the criminal, are crimes of opportunity. Someone was likely watching us load our trunk and we had no idea until the next morning when we found our stuff missing. The funny thing is, the thief or thieves were polite, if you can call it that. They did absolutely no damage to my car. The locks weren't broken, the trunk wasn't forced, the only thing out of place was that the hood was slightly ajar, and there wasn't even any damage under the hood. It sounds silly, but I was actually thankful to the thieves for doing it that way instead of smashing a lock or window. How kind of them...lol.

Well the TD bank was just robbed at gun point last month. a murderer was apprehended on Glensbay rd, 2 shootings also on Glensbay Rd, the Circle K on Business around 5th Ave S MB was robbed at gun point. I can go on and on. The MB are has more murders per capital than Baltimore and DC combined. MB area is a ghetto . Oh and they are using a backhoe to dig around for the young girl that has been missing for 5 years here as well..

As a future Myrtle/Conway resident, I can tell you guys that Myrtle is nothing when it comes to crime. During my various trips there, we never felt unsafe anywhere. Ocean Blvd is considered luxury compared to places like Orange Mound-South Memphis.

As a future resident from North Charleston; I hope it's not any worse than here. We saw a few nice subdivisions that we want to buy a house in. We don't want to move where there is high crime. Is there any place safe in America anymore?

Our society really has fallen apart.

Yes, Memphis, TN is worse than the entire state of South Carolina.

I would personally recommend the Conway area

I completely agree that our society has fallen apart, and it's very sad.

As far as the crime rate in MB, I have read for years, and it make sense, that the numbers are vastly skewed by crimes of opportunity against tourists in "the Strip" area down by the Boardwalk and in the resorts nearby, or really at most of the resorts, anywhere that is open to the public where trusting tourists hang out. A lot of people leave their common sense behind when they travel or think that because a resort looks nice and safe they can relax and be less vigilant about securing their possessions. If you leave your purse or camera by your beach chair at a busy resort full of anonymous people, chances are it will disappear and then there's another crime statistic that skews it for the entire city and was totally avoidable. Same with my example above with getting our bags stolen out of our trunk. We should have realized that even in a very statistically safe, beautiful neighborhood you can't take chances with your belongings in a public place. Thieves who target vacationers know that a lot of people take nice jewelry and extra money with them on vacation so they are very slick and watch for just such an opportunity as we afforded them (although all they got from us was some inexpensive clothing, my father-in-law's keys for his home in Michigan, and believe it or not, a Bible..."Thou shalt not steal"....) We didn't see any shady people around at all, it could very well have been resort employees or their friends who didn't appear conspicuous. We shouldn't have been so trusting in such a public place.

Also, the vast majorities of murders in MB, just like anywhere, happen between people who know each other and are involved in shady things. Not always, but almost all of the time. You aren't going to get shot going out to dinner or the the grocery store in MB, especially the further from "the action" you are. The abduction and murder of Brittenee Drexel in 2009 was horrific and she didn't know her attackers, but she was a young girl walking alone in "the Strip" area. These days a young girl should not walk alone anywhere, even in a small town, and these awful things happen everywhere. Last summer a twenty year old girl riding her bicycle in a rural, normally extremely safe cornfield county in northwest Ohio not far from where I live was abducted and murdered and her body found in a cornfield. It's a sad but true fact of life in America 2017, largely thanks to the easy access to any kind of sick, sick porn on the internet (people used to have to seek this stuff out outside of their homes which at least somewhat probably deterred the sickos, now it's available in the privacy of their living room at the click of a mouse) , drugs, mental illness, and the destruction of the family unit and overall disregard for life. Think of all the young female joggers who keep disappearing all over the country. Brittenee was just too trusting of her surroundings and the wrong people were down there and took advantage of the situation. She didn't deserve it, but the odds of that happening to you or i are probably zero.

Anyway, if possible, use a site like spotcrime.com to see the crime statistics for a specific neighborhood, as opposed to reading a blanket number for the entire city and you will probably feel much better about your move. In MB the crime numbers in "the Strip", the tiny, rundown motels/apartment buildings nearby, and the public places near there where a certain amount of homeless drifters always seem to hang out may be ridiculously high, but those for, say, Carolina Forest or other popular subdivisions are likely well below the national average and the neighbors watch out for each other.

If I wanted to move to MB full-time, I would not let the overall crime numbers deter me, I would look for specific numbers in specific areas and choose a home accordingly. I don't believe that people would be building million dollar+ homes in a city where they didn't feel safe.

Thanks ThegameHHH and Canudigit! Thanks for your thoughts. I hope we will love Conway or MB in a one story home. We can't wait to sell our home in North CHarleston. Stay dry everyone. It's going to get nasty out there soon!

The crime down here is some what kept on the down low to keep the tourist coming. Since I last posted the Feds have a backhoe digging around in Georgetown looking for the body of a young tourist who went missing few years back. The local grocery store was 'robbed' or the crooks grabbed all the cash from the till when they asked for change of a 20, several very substantial heroin busts, a group of people have been stealing CC at the beach and then charging up a storm so dont leave anything unattended at the beach and there have been a few murders / shootings. There are Meth tweekers everywhere on the prowl and I have never in my life seen so many people on EBT. Nothing wrong with needing help but it is a sure sign of the amount of poverty in this area .

On a social note ~ MB area is a VERY CONSERVATIVE area and lacks any culture, food, music, theater or art. Its non existent. And believe it or not in 2017 many not all whites down here take issue with anyone who doesn't look like them or think the way they do. Especially in the religion dept. This is Bible Belt central and if you're non Christian they dont like you. Sorry to sound like a total downer but I speak the truth.

2 murders a year in MB. 16 million visitors a years. More per capita than Baltimore. Something with you is way off. Balt. has a few dozen murders a year with a few million visitors. Check your facts.
