Biscman - I wouldn't worry about attitudes towards Northerners. You'll run into some of that, but as others on this forum have said, we have so many residents who have settled down here from up north, you'll find that most people will welcome you with open arms. Having lived in NYC, I am constantly connecting with people from the New York and New England area who have come to settle down here.
As for Pawleys Plantation, it's a beautiful community and an excellent choice for retirement. Not sure what your price range is, but you also may want to check out Prince George, which is right next to Pawleys Plantation. It's not as dense as PP - there are only 150 homesites spread out over almost 2000 acres, but the natural beauty is unparalleled for the area. Prince George does not have a golf course, but residents have access to DeBordieu's golf course, which is just next door.
