I realize the last post on here was from 2012 but I've recently been offered nursing job at the VA center near Sumter is it really that bad of a place to live? And if so are there any decent areas near the VA Center to live?

I would live in Conway and drive it everyday. I am just a visitor to SC but hope to live there in the near future, but I just love that town.

Do not drive to Sumter every day from Conway. It's at least an hour, more like 1.5 hours. Long commutes are terrible no matter where your home is.

You might find what you're looking for further west:

Mountains. Music. Mayberry. Merlot. Mayberry RFD icon Andy Griffith grew up in Mount Airy, North Carolina, and it's no coincidence that a stroll down Mount Airy's Main Street reminds people of the town of Mayberry from The Andy Griffith Show. In addition to Mayberry RFD and Andy Griffith, visitors find that Mount Airy, North Carolina is a great jumping off point for exploring the Yadkin Valley wine region, the breathtaking Blue Ridge Parkway, the stunning pinnacle of Pilot Mountain, or the twangy sound of bluegrass and old-time music. Whatever your passion, we invite you to step back to a simpler time when you visit Andy Griffith's hometown of Mount Airy, North Carolina—affectionately known as Mayberry RFD.

I have looked at different comments about the south. I am thinking of moving south soon. I have look at housing, crime rate and ethnic demographics. I'm looking for a well mixed community with access to the beach, historical areas and excellent food. There are good and bad in all places. I'm looking for a good blend, preferably educated humans with a zest for good living and excellent food.

I don't believe there is ANY place with "NO" crime. Sure, some crimes are worse than others, in the scheme of things, but crime is everywhere.

I think you need to find a town that gives you what you need, as far as work goes, and then find the right friends for you!
