Taking a drive down to Myrtle Beach this weekend...and I want to take advantage of tax free weekend. We want to check out the Tanger Outlets on our way back home on Sunday. Are the prices there really good? More specifically interested in Levis, Aeropostale, AE Outfitters, Rue 21, Forever 21, Nike. Thanks.
The prices are fairly cheap, but don't be fooled into thinking you are getting quality merchandise. These factory outlet stores sell inferior products and not the same things as the "regular" stores. In my opinion, this is not a bargain and I won't shop there. It all depends on what you want, though, but thought you should know this.
My experience with Tanger Factory Outlet is that the stores there are simply retail locations of each manufacturer. The products I have bought there have been the same quality and price as I could have bought at any other department or retail store. The "factory outlet" part of the name is just the official name of the shopping plaza...there are no real ongoing "outlet" bargains to be had unless there's a sale going on. My advice is to do your comparison shopping before going there and then decide where to get the best price using any coupons you can lay your hands on.
To vrexy's comment re quality...I have not shopped all the stores in the outlet center and quality could very well be less at some stores. My experience at the one's I've been to re quality has been good.
From Consumer Reports about factory outlet stores:
Beware of Inferior Quality Merchandise
Make sure you're comparing apples to apples when it comes to the quality of the merchandise as well as the price. A study by Consumer Reports found that some manufacturers produce lower quality versions of their products to sell at outlets, even though nearly 80 percent of the outlet shoppers they surveyed were unaware of any differences. Compare exact model numbers of electronics and appliances, and carefully check things such as fabric quality/content and stitching on apparel items.
I shop at the Tanger 501 (Hwy. 501) Outlet frequently and they have alot of sales going on all the time at the different stores. Recently I have bought clothes, shoes, other things at Haggar, Izod, Burlington, Sketchers, Rawleigh; wife and daughter have bought at Forever 21, Coach, Rue 21, Guess.
I believe all of the clothes, pocketbooks and things that we have bought are excellent and first quality. I believe the state law says that if a retailer sells second quality merchandise they have to state that is what it is. OOPS, I believe, does and they advertise that they do.
Don't forget to stop by the Tanger Services Store and pick up a Coupon Book. I believe they charge $5. and it is really worth every penny.
