Sure, if you don't mind the occasional student threatening to bomb the school.
No school in Horry county is "good". "Poor" yes; good, no.
I don't have first hand knowledge of Horry schools, but I do have kids that are in the Waccamaw schools in Gtown and can say that I am satisfied with them. I do have friends that have relocated from Long Island, where the schools are supposedly very good, and they are happy with schools in Horry... namely St James & Carolina Forest.

I'm sorry, but I went to a $10,000/year "prep", catholic high school in NJ and had plenty of bomb threats every year. Most of the problems people complain about on here don't seem to be very native to MB.
We are from Md. Crime is no different in SC than any where else.
There are no jobs here. Only low paying jobs in retail and food service.
If you have degrees in the medical field you will have a better chance than most.
Lots of medical centers and hospitals due to retirement community.
We are in Conway off RT 90, easy to access all areas from here.
So glad I didn't get a Myrtle Beach address. Higher tax base.
One thing to consider. The traffic in Myrtle Beach is worst on 501 near Carolina Forest. Best go sout to Murrells Inlet, Litchfield or Pawleys Island. You are still close to everything but little traffic.

I currently live in Upstate NY. My entire family is looking at moving to South Carolina for the better weather. I was thinking it would be best to research homes for sale on line and then schedule two weeks there for vacation with a realtor to look at homes. I am retired but my family would like to move there as well. I am very concerned about the job hiring situation as my oldest currently works for NY State and I would like her to be able to get a good job in SC with good benefits, realizing the pay scale would be different in SC. Also, I am concerned about the school districts for my grandchild that would be raised in SC. I have read that there is a high crime rate. We have always lived in upstate NY so this would be a huge welcomed change for us to move down south. My son in law originally is from the south. I figured we could purchase one home and I can make the move and once the rest of the family has found employment in SC they could make the move and find a home once they are there in SC. If you have any tips to share it would be greatly appreciated as this is a very huge decision. P.S. We are looking at Carolina Forest or Conway...Thanks.
Thanks for all the good info everybody. I am planning a move myself like emptynester from upstate ny to the conway area. We are coming down in may to talk to a realtor and look at places. Thanks again this helps alot.
I live in Carolina Forest and my home is in Flood Zone X which is a 250 year flood zone. This means that you could expect to get 1 flood every 250 years. No flood insurance is necessary.
Flood zone C is 500 years.
Flood Zone X is 250 years.
Flood Zone A is 100 years. (Flood insurance may be necessary to get a loan.)
The schools on International Drive are considered to be better than those on the 501 side of Carolina Forest.
As mentioned above best job opportunities are in medical and service related industries. Jobs are more plentiful also right before and during tourist seasons.
Quality of life is good with low crime rate.
Don't speed in Carolina Forest and especially Grissom Parkway. There are speed traps.
The Horry County police department (in Conway) stinks compared to the Myrtle Beach polich department which is excellent. But you probably won't ever need to call them.
