My wife and I are trying to relocate to S.C., in part because we are tired of long winters and would like more moderate weather, more often.

I have a sister in Chesapeake, Va. and she is very happy with the weather there - mild winters with temps in the 50s, little snow and what does fall goes away in short order. She has mentioned things like riding the motorcycle on Christmas day - stuff that is impossible in our current climate.

So from those that live in S.C., can you give us an idea of what winter is like, from say November thru March? I know I have seen pics of snow on the beaches, but I take it that is a rarity rather than the rule.

Last winter was cold - I think someone said it was the coldest in 16 years. But I am from NJ so it wasn't as cold as there. It did snow and the snow was around for a day. But the year before that I had shorts on decorating the Christmas tree!

I have lived here going on 11 years, last winter was the coldest since I have been down here! I live in Conway, so the weather does fluctuate from here to the beach, even though I am only 17 or so miles away from the ocean. We had 2 snows last year, both of which were melted by noon the same day, my parents who live at the beach got little if any snow, more like flurries! Temps here will be warmer in the winter than in Chesapeake, Va. They will also be hotter in the Summer! I have a friend who has a place in Chincoteague, VA and he is looking to relocate here for the warmer winters!

I love Chincoteague, VA and all, but being that close to MD I can believe the winters are pretty cold. Not as cold as here in MI (where we have our winter coats on by Halloween), but cold. Simply cannot wait to experience Christmas in shorts. We don't get our shorts on here til around Memorial Day, if not later.

Well, there's more to where you live besides the weather. If you are looking for some culture or something to do outside of golf and tourist stuff, you may want to try a different area other than MB.

TNKY, we weren't wearing shorts this past Christmas, or for that matter, I can't recall wearing them except for the first year we moved here, 7 years ago.

There was one very warm winter about that time , 7 years ago. We came down and in January sat outside on the porch, it was 80. Jan thru March that year was fantastic...warm and wonderful.
Now lately these past years........
The norm is about 50ish in the days of Jan and Feb. Not that it is always that temp.....it does frequently get up to the 70's. People are swimming as early as late March and continue on from there until winter sets in again. We did get a big snowstorm at the beach. Quite a few inches on the palms and lawns......it always melts very fast when that occurs. ( I measured 4" on our deck)
We do visit Charleston for enjoyable days and also go to Wilmington, NC for fun at the Cotton Exchange. Many winter days we stroll at Broadway at the Beach, take in a movie and visit the stores.
The Market Commons and Coastal Grand Mall can keep one busy also.
Our company always stays entertained with all there is to do.
Hoping for a warm winter this year, we are overdue. It is really a great place to enjoy ones winters.
Where can you golf year round in the North East?

Thanks for all the replies so far! The average temp graph was good to see also - I will try to find one for Charleston also as we have narrowed our search to that area & MB area.

Coming from a place where winter weather in January has hit -20* (with windchill approaching -50*), a winter where the daytime temps can be as much as 80 degrees or more warmer sounds awesome.

This is why we are trying to get further south - just can't deal with the extended cold weather anymore.
