For me a person who hates the cold, the winters here are still cold. I moved here from upstate New York and I am still freezing here in the winter time! It is a different kind of cold here. The air is damp so in the summer it is humid and in the winter if FEELS colder.
Me too, I just dislike the cold a big bunch. I have to say in the " middle of the night" it can drop to the 30's and even below. But, all in all it does rise during the day to 50/60 or above.
Once my hubby slipped on frozen ice from a sprinkler that was still running and broke four ribs......
Who would have imagined that would happen in SC and not on our icey steep driveway.
Many times when I check our Pocono, PA weather....it is in the teens or having a blizzard....while we are strolling the beach or boardwalk. So in that way, it is still better for us to be in SC to escape the harshness of winter.
Thanks for all the replies so far! The average temp graph was good to see also - I will try to find one for Charleston also as we have narrowed our search to that area & MB area.
Coming from a place where winter weather in January has hit -20* (with windchill approaching -50*), a winter where the daytime temps can be as much as 80 degrees or more warmer sounds awesome.
Won't see 80 degrees here in the winter. Hawaii maybe?!
If you start at -20*, then +60* would be 80* warmer. From what I've been reading, 60 degrees in the winter in S.C. should be kind of common.
Not in the last few years, at least. 40s maybe, which is still better than up north. My MIL was here this past winter with us and it was pretty chilly, so much so she didn't do her usual trek to the beach like she has done in past winters. We had one 70 degree Christmas that I can remember in the last 6-7 years. 2 years ago I couldn't even go outside because it was so cold and it was flaring up my asthma. I'd say our normal winters are high 40s, which I still think is great!

Last winter was the first I spent here. I thought it was chillier than it was supposed to be but still better than where I came from. That being said I still thought your "normal high 40's" was a little off so I went and checked www.accuweather.com. (http://www.accuweather.com/us/sc/myrtle-beach/29572/forecast-month.asp?mnyr=8-01-2010 - broken link)I could only go back to 2009 but this is what I found...
Jan 2009 Days under 50 degrees = 10 (21 over)
Feb 2009 Days under 50 degrees = 9 (19 over)
Dec 2009 Days under 50 degrees = 6 (25 over)
Jan 2010 Days under 50 degrees = 15 (16 over)
Feb 2010 Days under 50 degrees = 10 (18 over)
Nov 2009 Days under 50 = 0
March 2009 days under 50 = 3
March 2010 Days under 50 = 2
I remember in the late 90's coming to Myrtle beach one winter season and it was a glorious 3 months. Most days were 70 or more......( some 60's) but nothing real low. It spoiled us into thinking all years would be like that. However, they were not.......
I think the past two winters are the worst that I remember.
I'm hoping for a return to a more mild winter. But.......then again.......anything is better then the snow and ice back in NEPA.
One other year we did spend our first day in the 80's and it was January we were estatic.
Ah, I stand corrected. Guess we were around 50, some days less as your chart states. Still, it's a far cry from spring and summer temps. All I know, is that the year after we moved here, I had to dig out our winter coats to put the kids on the bus in the morning. Meanwhile, the winter we moved here, we were in shorts. You really can't tell what the temp will be from one year to the next. Last 2 winters I found it quite chilly, but it could be because I have asthma and nerve damage and I'm VERY sensitive to the cold.
I'm with ya pb I hate the cold also. I would like to place an order for one of those winters with the shorts.
