Is Montreal experiencing a population surge? I know that there is a current economic boom in the global tech industry, and I am really happy that it is NOT trying to compete with Toronto, but rather remain its own unique cultural hub unlike any other in North America. I am just wondering: who is moving into all of these condos/towers? Is all of this a result of Valerie Plante taking office?

Not a surge but rather a healthy population growth. The island is growing at (net gain)22-27K a year and the metro between 43-46K. When it comes to condos and people moving in there, it's mainly students, seniors, families coming back downtown, millennials, etc. Of course, the boom in tech/A.I, biometrics, health, banking, culture has helped fueled this. We can thank Coulliard and Coderre putting Montreal on the map, Plante is just riding the wave, or as I heard real estate developers say "the Coderre effect". Plante has been running the city to the ground though, her administration is so incompetent and filled with spoiled Marxist kids that it's ruined confidence in the city, but that's a different topic. She's pushing for A) foreign buyers tax even though we don't need it and B) 40% of units to be reserved for social housing/affordable housing. If both pass, then condo tower projects will decrease dramatically.
Cool map made by Franktko on SSP on future skyscrapers in Montreal. What's crazy is the majority, if not all of these buildings started in 2013/14.

This is so nice to see. And it looks like it's responsible construction too. Nothing tacky, nothing overdone. I like it. I'm also glad to see construction going on in the right side of the picture (West part of downtown... Westmount(?))

Yeah! that's part of the Square Children's hospital project. They tore down the old Children's hospital and it will be replaced by 6 towers between 85-120m and includes condos, social housing, seniors home and high-end luxury condos. In addition to this, a small green space and it'll also have a community centre, library and lots of retail. It'll help this small section downtown because the area around the Forum is a lil dead and needs some life.

I have a soft spot for that old hospital. It's where I spent many a day when getting wild injuries as a kid. Lots of trips there with mom. Lots of walks up that hill when the parking lot was full.

Yeah the developers wanted to keep it at first but there was a huge amount of asbestos and it would've cost too much to update and renovate it and it wasn't structurally sound to build on top, so they knocked it all down except the wing on Rene Levesque.
