I believe the numbers on the flights have dipped quite a bit since school started. The Chicago flight is scheduled to be suspended indefinitely in November, so we will be down to only the Denver flight. Hopefully, it comes back with warm weather. It would be interesting to know the number of business travelers coming in on them. A large percentage of the flyers this summer were headed to the beaches, from here to Destin. While PNS also has Frontier, the days the airline flies into a city makes a big difference. We had summer Saturday flights and PNS had Sunday. I think more people wanted the Sat-Sat stay over rather than get home on Sunday and right back to work on Monday.

Flights into Gulf Shores would just dilute those at BFM and PNS. I think that would be a waste of money, but won't be surprised to see it happen.

The plan to move the terminal to BFM will be good for the Mobile area, but the current discount carrier terminal is probably going to struggle in the cooler months because of the weather in the other cities. These discount carriers, like the two that were teased, have to find a niche on certain days and certain destinations that will work. I think we could see one come next Spring, but not sure these things would ever be more than seasonal at this point.

The Chicago flight is seasonal but has actually performed better than Denver recently. It will return in the spring. Denver will be year-round as there is more year-round demand to Denver than Chicago (skiing). The Chicago flight does not operate to Pensacola either in the winter. As for September, industry wide, load factors tend to decline most everywhere as leisure travel takes a large hit. In other words, not too concerning for us locally at this point.

I wouldn't be surprised if Frontier adds a destination to begin in April or May and wouldn't be surprised if we learn of a new airline at the downtown terminal in that interim.

Gulf Shores would impact Pensacola much more than Mobile, but Mobile would still feel it a little bit.

Mobile has experienced a significant increase in air passenger traffic because of the downtown airport.

Quote:
Mobile Airport passenger traffic grew almost 7.4% in the fiscal year 2019 over the fiscal year 2018. This growth rate is double their normal growth rate for Mobile and over three times the projected growth rate of passenger traffic nationwide. Several factors led to this impressive growth rate in Mobile.

Mobile is not big enough for two airports with passenger service at each one.

West Mobile is really paying the price for the misplaced priorities of annexing the Schillinger area...
What’s wrong with Schillinger?

Too far from interstate access and it's privately owned.
