Every now and then when your life gets complicated and the weasels start closing in, the only cure is to load up on heinous chemicals and then drive like a bastard from Hollywood to Las Vegas ... with the music at top volume and at least a pint of ether.” - Hunter S. Thompson

I have a theory that slower drivers generally don't drive as many miles per week, therefore speeding does not save them as much time and has less of a benefit.
Exactly. It's the people who rarely drive that cram our freeways. I drive by some tool daily who was just in the fast lane going 67 for the past 7 miles and the idiot gives me some clueless look as to why I'm passing them shaking my fists. Of course you're driving slow, you have no life and nowhere to go to waste your life.

If some of these slow puttser drivers had somewhere to go, they'd realize the importance of swift, attentive driving.

And, to the illegally underposting of speeds. It's a trick the government plays to collect money from fees. Think about it. If speed limits were 80 mph, they would pull over less people and make less money.

I don't get why it's illegal to drive 80mph on the freeway. I can control my vehicle. My vehicle is designed to handle them speeds. Who is the government to say that it's illegal to drive my car a speed that's significantly lower than a speed I can handle

It's like the government saying, ok, ok it's good to text, but you can only send 1000 texts a month... that's absurd. I can text 5000 times a month and it harms nobody

Last May I drove up to Salt Lake City, from Las Vegas, and there's now long stretches of I-15 which Utah has boosted to 80MPH. Bless their hearts!

As you may know, rural roads in Nevada have a posted 70MPH speed limit.
And with the scarcity of people and police in rural Nevada, when I'm doing rural Nevada, I keep it just slightly under 100MPH.

Here, I do like I35 better than I94, since there is some sort of social norm that it's normal to go about 78-82. I94 never seems to get over 73

Read my earlier post about how speed limits are SUPPOSED to be set. The sign you see is not necessarily the legal speed limit. In Michigan, for example, speed limits are supposed to be set based on 85th percentile measured vehicle speeds based on a state law passed several years ago. However, many communities are not in compliance with this law which means the speed limits in those communities are illegally underposted.

Just because some states follow that pattern doesn't mean all do. Heck, if you used the 85% rule here in Atlanta, the metro interstate speed limit would be 80.

What's wrong with that? Some states already have 80mph speed limits. I'm sure you know the American Interstate Highway system was designed for 90mph based on 1950s automotive technology.

80mph? 90mph? That's faster than I want to go. It's too dangerous.

No it isn't. The American highway death rate has declined since the 55 speed limit was abolished and speed limits went up.
