Interesting.

St. Louis, I believe, was a target community for Yugoslav emigrants in the same way that we were for Somali emigrants up here. But that probably should've shown up in the 2000 census, and not only now...

At any rate, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Milwaukee have all-- to my knowledge-- started to grow again. Cleveland and obviously Detroit are still in free-fall. Pittsburgh I don't know about....

Both of those cities are declining in population, and the number of white residents is decreasing in both number and percentage.

Cincinnati

2000 Census:

Total Population: 331,285

  • White: 53.0% (175,492) Non-Hispanic Whites: 52.5% (173,781)
2006-2008 Estimates:

Total Population: 299,577

  • White: 51.0% (152,643) Non-Hispanic Whites: 50.0% (149,857)
(Source 1) (Source 2)

Milwaukee

2000 Census:

Total Population: 596,974

  • White: 50.0% (298,379) Non-Hispanic Whites: 45.4% (270,989)
2006-2008 Estimates:

Total Population: 582,819

  • White: 46.8% (272,749) Non-Hispanic Whites: 40.4% (235,535)
(Source 1) (Source 2)

You also mentioned Pittsburgh, so I'll do that one, too.

Pittsburgh

2000 Census:

Total Population: 334,563

  • White: 67.6% (226,258) Non-Hispanic Whites: 66.9% (223,982)
2006-2008 Estimates:

Total Population: 295,988

  • White: 67.0% (198,359) Non-Hispanic Whites: 65.9% (195,028)
(Source 1) (Source 2)

Wiki uses census estimates for Milwaukee (2008) and Cincy (2009), and has them both increasing (Milwaukee at about 604,000 and Cincy at 333,000). I wonder if the estimates you are using are more recent?

Anyway, it's tough to put stock in what the census estimates. We won't really know until the results are actually released, unless there's something like the Met Council in either of those cities that does its own projections. Even when we do have census results, there are bound to be challenges....

What I think is sad about Minneapolis is the dispairity between Blacks and Whites. I would like to see numbers on educated African Americans or African Americans in professional settings. Am I the only one that see's this problem? I feel like in Minneapols-St. Paul, African Americans are clearly the inferior social class in terms of education, wealth and employment. How is that different than African Americans as a whole in this country? Not a whole lot, but in Minneapolis it seems much more apparent.

When I was in Philadelphia, where the city is nearly 45%/45% in terms of black and white, it wasn't uncommon to see African Americans walking around in Business suites and our hotel manager was African American. You would not see this in Minneapolis (or at least it would be surprising).

Does anyone not see what I am talking about? I really do believe Minneapolis-St. Paul does have a racism issue. Sure, for the most part the area is a 'sophisticated, educated, and responsible' demographic, but that still doesn't mean that there is this giant dispairity amongst social classes, wealth, employment and education.
Cool Story Bro

I'm a Mexican American who moved from Orange County California. I have found that for the most part Minneapolis is a friendly city. I think class divisions are much more the problem than racial ones. I work at a big retail store and I was pleasantly surprised that whites latinos and blacks often take breaks together and all sit around and talk. I wouldn't say it's unheard of in California but a certain sameness seems to exist despite racial differences here in the twin cities. If there is any tensions it's between upper class snobs and those supposedly beneath them.

I came here from California and, from what I've seen, it depends on the age of the Minnesotan. Most of the young people here are pretty much color-blind when it comes to race. But I've also met a lot of older Minnesotans who dislike anyone who's "different." I once overheard two old women at a grocery store discussing their fear that their grandchildren might be "playing with Catholics." I laughed out loud ---couldn't help myself.

Minneapolis is not racist. It's the most liberal city in the midwest, with the possible exception of Madison, so there is a large acceptance of people of other cultures/ethnicities/lifestyles, etc. Midtown Minneapolis has a large Hispanic community with a lot of businesses along Lake Street.
