Yes, hurricanes do tumble them down occasionally, but not much. Those trees are tropical, just like the Royal Palm, and they can stand hurricanes.

The tree that you find all around are hardwood hammocks (Laurel de Indias). When a hurricane tumbles down a centenary tree, the tree is transplanted to a park right in the middle of old Havana and most survive.

The tree is beautiful and lush in tropical and subtropical climates, in Spain it's just a shrub or a small tree.
