Hi I'm looking to buy a house in the area, I'm married with a child on the way. Me and my wife have looked around the south shore area (having grown up in Hewlett) and are really interested in buying in Oceanside or Baldwin. These towns are so similar and I was wondering what people's opinions were on which town would be better to buy in. I've heard that Oceanside schools are better.

Have you and your family been living out of state for awhile? I can't see how you can make this statement in this day and age.

They are no longer similar. I'd pass on both. Check Merrick instead.

Oceanside! It's still lovely by the water.
However, if you can live in Merrick- that will probably be even better.
Some areas are better than others.

They used to be somewhat similar. Not anymore.
Though Oceanside is quickly catching up to Baldwin. Oceanside still has the better of the 2 as far as schools, but it's kinda splitting hairs at this point.
Merrick is better bang for your buck, long term especially.
RVC is another possible choice.

If my only choices were Oceanside or Baldwin, I would choose Oceanside. That is not even a fair comparison to compare the two. Personally I wouldnt choose either. Oceanside is not as nice at it once was and the traffic on Long Beach Rd or Atlantic Avenue, etc go get down into Oceanside is always horrible. Merrick, RVC, or even Lynbrook would all be better choices.

Oceanside is fine but everything is relative to what you are used to or expect. Traffic sucks everywhere. Ever try driving on Lincoln or N. Village Ave's in RVC during morning or evening rush? There are ways to get around everything. O'side schools are still quite good. There are not so nice neighborhoods and nice ones, just like everywhere else.

Baldwin is a lovely place to raise a family. It's more convenient to the parkways than most of Oceanside is. Don't be put off by all the negativity you hear about Baldwin. Between Oceanside and Baldwin, you'll get better value for your money in Baldwin with larger lots and a great community feel, and you will have significantly more diversity - something we consider a plus. We are very happy with the schools in Baldwin.
