With her degree she should make way more than 50k. Let’s use the public school system in the state. She would need to get certified it’s nothing more than spending a few hundred and taking a test. Let’s just say she has 6 years of experience and taught in a public school she’s looking at 80-105k in a public school on LI or in NYC.
Easily and with her degree she’d probably have no issue getting a NYC schools job which pays very well
$100k in MO puts you in a nice financial bracket. I know someone who moved there from LI and bought a 7000 square foot house with an indoor pool. If you have not been to LI suggest you come see it first. Also if you hope to save for a house that is another story as well.
PhD in education is sort of nebulous. Care to elaborate and give her work history? Nepotism is strong when it comes to hiring in Long Island schools.
But he dosent make 100k in MO so it’s irrelevant that’s why he’s presumably moving here.
Farmingdale is the poster child for Nassau County's revitalization via the build-out of luxury apartments close to a walking Village and proximate to a train station. I looked at Farmingdale before I decided to bug out to Florida. One bedroom is looking at $3,500 to $5,000 a month rent. Good luck finding enough square feet in the village itself. Residential areas just two blocks away from the Swanky Village crawl with scum and low lives. With $100,000 income you will qualify for a one-bedroom. So now you're not even near the financial ballpark of the income you need to live in Long Island. To my standard you need $250,000 to live a bare minimum middle-class Lifestyle on Long Island.
PS School administrators earn $250,000 more. Those jobs are highly coveted so no you're not going to get one with a PhD in education. PS they're pumping out degrees like doctorates in Education, Health Administration, other degrees in numbers way above the demand for those jobs.

250k to live a standard middle class lifestyle on LI??!! LMAO. What planet are you on? And who says the OP will want a village “luxury” apartment on busy Main Street or even have to live in farmingdale? OP I’d advise you ignore this complete and utter nonsense post above.

I agree; that statement was ridiculous.
I personally know a half dozen families of mid-30somethings who are in the $175-200K combined-income bracket, with either one or two kids, who are doing just fine on that. 2500-3000 sq ft house, taxes $12-$15K, two cars, vacation every year, the usual bells and whistles as far as "having stuff."
Granted, they don't eat in restaurants 5 nights a week and don't have any gold-plated toilets and they drive SUVs instead of a Mercedes or Porsche, but still....
I thought he said in the original post that he has an offer for $100k. If that is true, he is taking home around $70k. That would be about $5800/ mo. These are rough numbers.

$250,000 means you are pOBABLY BRINGING IN OVER $10,000/ mo. No one needs to make that kind of money to live in an average neighborhood. That is more than double what the average household makes. They could easily live in Farmingdale or a similar neighborhood on $80k - $100k provided they don’t live an extravagant lifestyle. This means local vacations, not going to restaurants regularly, etc. totally doable. I did it for less and never struggled on just about $60k only 6 years ago.

How much should someone making $170k a year take home monthly? Is it normal to gross $3k weekly but only net $1800-$1900 (no retirement savings)

75k, not 70k.
