The median family income is around $116K in Nassau County, so you’d be in the lower 50%. Sad but true.

In fact, teacher salaries are one of the reasons you will see given, on forums such as these, for our ridiculously high property taxes LOL
Teachers are well paid yes, but hard to get a job on the island ... a lot go to Queens & Bklyn

I am willing to commute about 30-40 minutes each way to work. Where is the safe-cheapest housing available in the area.

Thanks
Agree with everything that has been said so far. 3 bedroom apartment is going to be tough to find in a good area for less than 3k. Teacher salaries are good but hard to find a job here. Bottom line is 100k will not be enough...and it’s a risk to move here without knowing whether your wife would find work.

If she’s got a PHD in education she will have a good shot at getting a job on the island, surely in the city either way it would nearly double the OP’s income eventually

It’s not easy to get a teacher job on LI but not as hard as some people here make it seem either. Especially if you are high school, special Ed etc

Yes it’s not impossible especially if you are in a desired specialty like you say math/sciences, special ed. But still hard... For every full time teaching position that opens up there are many candidates who are waiting that have maybe worked as a sub or teaching assistant and are known to the district.

Up to OP whether they are willing to take the risk and move here. If your wife finds a good job you will be fine financially in Suffolk county.

It can be done easily. I rented a house in Farmingdale from 2011 through 2014 on nearly 60K /yr. We had two young kids also. We got along fine. I was taking home home 3k /month which paid the rent, all the utility bills, food and gas. Couldn’t save anything though. Rents are higher today but even if it’s $3k, you are bringing home at least $70k (or $5800/ mo). You will have nearly $3k /month more than I had. Good luck.

you can get something livable in copiague for 330k not in flood zone. That will run you around 2300/mo with utilities [if house has oil, use CC and convert that crap asap to gas]. assuming you are married, and no 401k nonsense, you take home ~6k, rent out the basement and net 4700 for rest of your living, which is pretty good.

I'm going to disagree and say that you should be fine. Rent will be in the 3K range, but your wife having a doctorate and looking for a job is the key factor. There are numerous salaried jobs that she could walk right in and make 50K until she finds something more suitable. Even tutoring on the side pays very well, especially around here. With your wife working, you will have plenty of options for safe housing with good schools near Farmingdale. The Farmingdale school district itself is okay, but there are better options in the surrounding towns.
