The fastest way from the Patchogue/Blue Point/Bayport area to Stony Brook University Hospital is straight up Nicholls Road. Is there a specific reason that you want to be so far south as Patchogue?

Are you looking to rent or to buy? If buying, being able to close within a relatively short time (even if you're a cash buyer) can be dicey unless the house is already vacant.

Why not talk to a real Estate Agent in Suffolk County? Did you not post something similar under another name looking for medical needs for your son on LI? or is this just a coincidence.

and if I am correct and I believe that I am, I thought the OP's child had a life threatening Illness and needed to come to NY ASAP! and could not wait. I also believe this same person has also posted in Florida, and some other areas near Boston looking for housing. Yes I did my research and I feel like we are being scammed. I say this because since 2015 this person has been saying they need to leave PA and move here.

This is not a scam . We are looking for a way to get to Long Island and we teried income based but there are long wait lists we are retire we would have to rent a small house or cottage , and look around PA is much cheaper but no major medical centers . It is not easy as LI. Is expensive

I would say that you are out of luck, You must understand that you are not alone in your situation and that is why there are many on long waiting lists ahead of you. I advise that you stay put and commute if you must have Long Island.

Ah, now I understand. From your original post I thought you were looking to buy, or for a 'standard rental' house.

If you are on a waitlist for a subsidized (section 8) house rental then that explains a lot. Don't know what part of PA you are currently in but if you are within a couple hours drive of NYC or LI you are probably better off "commuting" from where you are, as @nuts2uiam says. Unless you are wanting to be able to see a particular specialist doctor who is affiliated with Stony Brook, or if they have a specific department there that applies to your family situation, it may be better to go to a Nassau or even NYC hospital if you end up commuting from PA.

The Northwell Health hospitals (used to be called North Shore LIJ, and before that, Long Island Jewish Medical Center) are now an excellent network serving Suffolk, Nassau, Queens, and also some locations in NYC. They bought several formerly-independent hospitals and upgraded those facilities. They share records within the Northwell database and so if you were to go to any one of their hospitals they have your file instantly available and also within their physician network which is quite large. They also operate several walk-in urgent care locations (GoHealth) and testing labs.

Stony Brook is a teaching hospital; some people consider that more desirable while others do not. I'm not a fan of teaching hospitals myself but YMMV as they say.

But if you are constrained by having to be on a waitlist for income-based housing of a certain type or in a specific area, you may have a long wait. Were you working with a local realtor here before, or was it a private person who had a rental available, or who knew someone who knew someone..?

From your posts it's not quite clear what your financial situation is, including your possible budget.

Right now, there are less than a handful of small homes (2 bedrooms) for rent in Patchogue and Ronkonkoma, possibly more, depending on your budget and other qualifications.
