All that said, with your budget and commute to NYC, why either of those areas? I'd look a little closer to NYC. You'll get less bang for your buck, but you'll still get plenty.
yeah like maybe Roslyn? he wants north shore, you want water, Roslyn has both; plus small walkable village plus easy commute plus great schools. can't speak to the tolerance level of the community but very affluent. currently 32 active single-family property listings in the school district on mlsli between 800k and 1.2 mil.

For the properties we saw closer to the city, it just wasn't enough for what we are spending. The commute to the city isn't an issue. It will either be by car or LIRR. It is more about the QOL of life we will have in either of the towns.
Babylon has a better commute, but Dix Hills is IMO superior.

Could you possibly elaborate on why you think Dix Hills is superior to Babylon? All feedback is greatly appreciated.
I don't get the appeal of Dix Hills at all....it's just a suburb with no character that has nothing you'd want to do...you'll be traveling to do anything fun. Why not Huntington village, or even Northport? Both are closer to the water and have way more character than Dix Hills. Perfect compromise for you.
I definitely see the appeal in Dix Hills. Tons of mansions, huge colonials and large ranches on perfectly manicured hilly lawns with no flood zones. Plus, it's lodged right in between Melville, Hauppauge and East Farmingdale; which are three major LI job centers.

I mostly agree D.H. is kinda boring, seems every home is sided in oversized brown wooden shingles, and yes, you do have to drive to many things. Big hilly properties though, some with great landscaping that may appeal to someone.
Babylon Village is an incorporated Village, and one would have to pay a modest additional Village tax along with their Town tax. Well worth it IMO as you have tennis courts, nine hole golf course, seasonal outdoor swimming pool, fishing docks, Argyll Park, short drive over the bridge to the beaches, Village provided services (code enforcement, sanitation/highway department, etc.). I think the Village even acquired a large surplus military transport vehicle to rescue people in future storms...
Great walking Village too with health food stores, eateries, bars, coffeehouses, etc. But the Village is of course more contained, houses and buildings closer together, less elbow room. It's not the Cotswold's in England but it does come closer than D.H. If the Village could acquire some Morris Dancers and a Village Idiot it would be a very close runner up...

Those things are all true, coming from Miami I think the OPs will be bored. Fact is there are plenty of places in the budget that offer all this, and the OP already said the job is in NYC and commute time not an issue....with all else being equal there are places with way more character than DH to live (although when I was kid driving down Vanderbilt Pkwy to Dix Hills Pool I swore I'd live over there as an adult!!...so yes, i get the appeal).

Wouldn't you have a better quality of life with a shorter commute, rather than a longer commute? What kind of hours will you be working at your jobs in the city?

Along the south shore thats really the only town that we really liked and felt would fit for our lifestyle. My partner can get to the office at anytime. I have a feeling we are going to settle in Babylon Village.
