Dismal and bleak come to mind.

WHB is very much a seasonal Village, but personally, I think that's part of the charm. But to call it "dying"? Let's get real. In the dead of winter, there is absolutely no problem getting a meal and a few drinks in the village, but your choices will be limited, yes. But even so, it's not like you're in the middle of nowhere

I live in the 3V area, but i would also recommend Westhampton Beach..Location is great in between SH and SB, and I think it is a nice walkable village, with some neat restaurants and bars. And you are close the the east end action without getting swallowed up by it. And, I LOVE Cupsogue Beach.

Just my $0.02

I tend to agree, although dismal and bleak may be a little harsh. As far as year round in-town activity it gets worse and worse each year, so in that sense it's dying. 2014 Boggs stayed open thru Thanksgiving, 2015 shut down after Halloween. Goldberg's is useless after Labor Day, Funcho's hours are a joke, no supermarket.

Childless OP couple, I would look at Sayville, possibly Patchogue for walkable downtown activity, convenient to LIRR, never would consider WHB.
When ready for home and family, then look to purchase in or around Westhampton (not necessarily WHB village). You will pay a little more for home in Westhampton, Speonk, Eastport areas but can save a LOT on real estate tax over the years.

Great, thanks everyone for the input. We are likely to try exactly that...the Sayville / Patchogue area and a later move to WHB or Sag Harbor when kids arrive. Thanks!

I live in the patchogue medford school district but not the village. Patchogue village is very lively . ITs very family oriented. Not just for people in their 20's. Heck on new years eve at 8pm -9pm they will have their midnight on main which has fireworks and a countdown at 9pm . Patchogue has christmas parade and boat parade. Your standard saint patricks day parade. It is pretty lively .

My advice to the original poster is - School District, School District, School District. Since you are young professionals and don't have kids yet, you have no idea how much you lives will be dominated by your kids - in a good way. Your friends will become the parents of your kids friends. Your free time will be at practice/games for their sports. And every waking second you will be thinking about them, worrying about them, and making sure they are happy and will be happy adults. Pick the right school district and everything will fall in place. Pick the wrong one and you will be very unhappy. And don't just go on test scores or what others may say. Look at where you and your kids will best fit in - yes, this may mean that you are racially/culturally profiling your districts. And the most important metric to look at in a school district is percentage of kids who graduate HS on time and percentage that go to four year colleges. This is especially important in your situation because since you will be working in an outer-suburban ring, you will have tons of areas to choose from.

Believe it or not, but the best way to scope out a school district in terms of fit is to just spend some time at a Little League/soccer complex where the kids of that district play - hopefully it is a large multi-field one where you can see a lot of people in a small area. This will let you see what you are getting into. Ask yourself, can I see myself, and my kids, hanging out with these families? Just do your research so you know which schools the kids are going to. Many communities have a LL complex where the LL district boundaries mirror the school district's. Spend a Saturday in May at the complex and you will see what your life will be in 7-14 years.

Hi JDP83,
Sounds like you have a plan, good for you! I'd like to add the North Fork for consideration to your "Phase2" list primarily because of your interests in Stonybrook University Hospital and also your wife's interest in yoga. In July 2015, The Eastern Long Island Hospital Board of Trustees voted to affiliate with Stony Brook University Hospital. We're now part of the system I believe. ELIH is in Greenport, and is a great community hospital in arguably the prettiest of "walk about" towns on Long Island, or I should say Maritime Village, with its marina, ice-skating rink, Victorian carousel, dances in the park, farmers markets, great restaurants and surrounded by pick your own farms, vineyards and some of the best chefs and restaurants anywhere in the world for local organically raised produce. Much of the land on the North Fork is now preserved for agricultural use only which has severely limited future housing development, and the range of Artisnal products continues to grow year by the year. "Farm to table" is readily available to everyone who lives here in the true sense as the distance between field and table is optimized, retaining the nutritional value better than say, driving it from here to markets further west, Brooklyn and NYC, even much on the south shore comes from here. I guess it depends on where you'll be working. Southampton is certainly doable from here as a commute, as is SBU at around 45 minutes - 1 hour depending on the season. Many North Forkers indeed make that commute regularly for access to the specialist doctors, but I hope the merger between ELIH and SBU will result in more opportunities for those in the medical field here as well. I'm a NOFO resident on the Mattituck / Cutchogue border for 10+ years and very happy to have found this little piece of paradise and wonderful community for myself and my family. Good luck! ETA: fixed typos
