Well, I have to say getting my Masters Degree in teaching was a lot of logistics and money but it wasn't 'hard.' I worked a lot harder for my BA in English.

In today's schools on Long Island...it's who you know, not how well you teach. I have first hand experience of this. During my Masters Degree training, I was student teaching and had to take a class with other student teachers once a week.

One girl in there, I vaguely knew from high school. She sat during most of the classes with a Cheshire Cat grin on her face. Why? Well, her mommy worked for the board of ed (or something connected with the district) and she was 'already set up' the moment she graduated.

Today she's been teaching over a dozen years, making very, very nice money I am sure.

Even 'subbing' is not easy here.

You would think Newsday would have a field day doing an investigative report on what really goes on in the schools when it comes to hiring.

American Renaissance News: Minority Scores Lag On Teaching Test (broken link)

Does the above explain part of the reason why it is so easy to become a teacher in New York?

Easy? Not really, I had to pass 3 NYS tests to become an elementary teacher. Majority of people don't pass on the first try. Each test is $80, so imagine how expensive it can get if you fail. You would assume these are easy 2+2 tests that anyone can pass, but they aren't.

Are you serious Rachael? Do you really think the teacher certification exams are in any way as difficult as the MCAT, LSAT or the CPA tests? Please.

They must be dumber than a tree stump.

How can you say that they aren't difficult if you've never seen for yourself? Remember, we have to do complicated math in our head. No calculators allowed. And that's just elementary. See for yourself:

Go to Content specialty tests, and Mathematics. Scroll down to page 23. This is what middle school teachers need to pass.

NYSTCE Preparation Guides

This is not stuff you would find on the show "Are you smarter than a 5th grader"

I graduated from Central Islip about 15 years ago. And there were some good teachers. But for the most part, a good portion would say open your books and read pages 1 threw 15 among yourselfs and be prepare for a test on those pages tomorrow. It was like the teachers didn't interact with the class. Also the school was always broke, and events or after school activities were cancelled.

Education has changed a lot in 15 years. Ever since NCLB was enacted, education is not longer "open your books to page 20 and let's read this little tidbit about we're about to learn." It's all progressive now.

Rachel:

The LAST/ATW is merely common sense. A blindfolded monkey could pass that test. There are questions in it asking how to convert simple fractions into decimals. Don't kid yourself. Try taking the MCAT.
