Any KY Residents Who Moved From Los Angeles? (Lexington, Louisville: appointed, sale)

Trish - if you go to City-Data's main page with a google search for Louisville -you will find a listing of realtors there. That will lead you to those contacts you need. Since they can't advertise on the board - check out the main page.

Yes - you will find hat lovers around - and the closer it gets to Derby - the stores are full of them, and you will also find specialty shops in town that make onlt 'Derby Hats' that time of year.

The land you are describing will not be found in Louisville/Jefferson County - but you can go south to Bullitt or Hardin (both edge Jefferson County) or east to Oldham or Spencer, and you will find what you are looking for.

The cities you will be checking into are LaGrange, Elizabethtown, Mt.Washington, Shepherdsville, Taylorsville - oh and a little further out is Shleby County - where Shelbyville is located.

Some of these areas are a little closer to Louisville - but all are within traveling distance of an hour or less.

Good luck - and do not think yourself an 'under-achiever' for not owning. That's just the way the world sometimes works nowadays - but you will put down roots soon. What a great new adventure!

I'm considering a move out of Kentucky within the next couple of years. I'd love to live on the outskirts of Los Angeles or somewhere along the coast of SoCal. Having been to LA before (and returning later this month) I can see why it burns people out but there's so much energy and good vibes out there that I can't seem to stay away. There's something for everyone out there, Kentucky has it's high points but overall it's a pretty conservative place that gets boring in a hurry. Bear in mind that I've lived in Kentucky for all of my 33 years so I'm just like you only different.

Lexington and Louisville are the places to be in Kentucky. You'll find peace and quiet elsewhere in the state and nothing else! Louisville is more of a real metropolitan city and Lexington is a pretentious (but clean, safe and peaceful) overgrown farm town. Wearing red or blue clothing won't get you shot around here, but it WILL invite arguments and mind-numbing debates over sports (L'ville Cardinals vs. UK Wildcats.)

Kentucky's governments are just as corrupt and wasteful as California's. We are also the unfortunate host of a Republican governer but not one as cool as Arnold!

The weather isn't as bad as people 'round here think but it is unpredictable. Winters are mild until January through April where it can get pretty cold and stay that way. Summers are hot as hell and the humidity gives the south a run for the money.

If you want entertainment, be prepared to search for it because, unlike LA, it's few and far between.

Everyone says our taxes in KY aren't so bad, but I'm a single man with no dependants, no house, no property, and no worries! Big brother drains me wherever I go.

The absolute worst part about Kentucky when compared to LA? NO RAINBOW BAR AND GRILL! NO SUNSET STRIP!!! I do love West Hollywood!

Overall, Kentucky (especially Lexington) is a clean, safe and inviting (if somwhat mundane) place to live out your days. Just be prepared for the radical change in the pace of your day to day life from what you've gotten used to in California.

What made you choose Ky????

I do have a friend who moved to Mayfield, Graves County back in the late 90's she was originally from San Deigo area. I could ask if I could send on her email. I know that her area.. is really out in the boonies... not sure how rurual you want to live.

Hi Deborah! Well, we don't want to be out in the boonies - now if we had horses, yes...but we want to zip down town in 15 or 20 minutes and be more centrally located (I think going from where we are to the boonies might be a little shocking for us city folk, LOL).

Why did we choose Kentucky? Well, we really, really like the people, the beauty, the lack of traffic and the subtle sophistication of the area around Louisville - great little towns, shopping, a good representation of the arts - some wonderful restaurants.

The cost of living is another factor - we live at the beach and I will tell you that everything here is incredibly expensive. Since we will be young active retirees, we want to travel the world, pay cash for our house and have money left over to visit our kids and grandkids, help others and just enjoy ourselves.

Also, my best friend and her husband moved to Prospect (Hunting Creek Estates) and we have developed other friendships there during our visits - some have come to see us here in California - these couples are just delightful, interesting people.

We like Prospect - the proximity to the airport, downtown and shopping yet it has a rural feel to it...not tons of services, but what they have is very nice and really sufficient for most days. We like that KY is centrally located - you can drive to New York in a day (and a lot of other places that we like).

My husband and I really like Indian Hills as well but once you are out of the residential area, there is quite a bit of traffic....we wouldn't be completely opposed to living in a little historic community like St. Matthews or the Highlands - we know there is more traffic, but we really love the feel of those communities...we don't care for La Grange or Crestwood, although the little downtown historic La Grange area is great...we would consider beautiful Pewee Valley and parts of Anchorage (the unincorporated parts that don't have to pay those horrendous taxes!)....so you can see, we are pretty open to considering a variety of places to live around Louisville.

We don't drink or go bar hopping or night clubbing so the nightlife really doesn't concern us....we just want a safe, quiet, affordable life so that we can enjoy our retirement.

I am a resident of Western KY near Paducah. I recently had neighbors who relocated here from Simi Valley CA. They stayed here 1 year before his job required him to move. According to them, they enjoyed living here better than anywhere else they had been. I have never been to California, but I am sure that my region, as well as Louisville, Lexington, Frankfort, Bowling Green, etc. offer a wide range of cultural advantages, employment opportunities, educational opportunities, etc. that are combined with a relaxed, friendly, neighborly environment. http://www.paducah-tourism.org/ is a good website to check out the area. http://www.kentuckylakebarkley.org/attractions.html (broken link) is also a good source of info of the area.
I personally enjoy the relaxed, friendly lifestyle available in my area. While I live in a rural setting, I can enjoy activities at nearby Kentucky & Barkley Lakes, attend Las Vegas style shows at the new state-of-the-art Luther F. Carson Four Rivers Performing Arts Center, visit art galleries with displays by talented artists who relocated here from all over the world in order to be part of the Lowertown Artist Relocation program, enjoy shopping, & dining at many fine restaurants, attending the annual Quilt Show which brings over 30,000 contestants and visitors into the area for the week-long event from all over the world. For those interested in a casino, there is a major casino located across the Ohio river in Southern Illinois. Most of these attractions, and many more are about 1/2 hour to 1 hour drive away for most residents in our region. Kentucky has a low cost-of-living with many employment opportunities available. Education at every grade level has always been a high priority for residents & state government. Western Kentucky has a lot to offer for anyone wanting to relocate.

Hello everyone. I am formally from the LA, CA area. I will be moving their shortly to. I am in Southern Illinois for family medical reasons. I do miss some things in LA like the nightlife, beaches, weather, cheap car washes, but other than that, I would never go back to LA. LA is to expensive, bad smog, traffic, high car registrations, smogging, high housing, fires, low wages, rude people, dirty, crime, ect. If you can do without the nightlife & weather, than I would suggest moving.

why is it that Southwest Jefferson county id always left out in these threads? The area is getting new subdivisions all the time and you can still get land out here. It's safe and you are close to the expressway so getting around is easy. Do a search for 40258 or 40272. I am in 40216 but am not really in Shively but not quite PRP either.

You make a good point. This area currently lacks a lot of retail, but is currently the most southern acting part of the metro. It is very in tune with faith and family in SW county. Good people out there.
