You will need an IL state map. Many of the state routes are blacktop 2 lane highway. Out in the country could have decent speeds. Limit would be 55. May go 5 miles or so then slow down to go thru some tiny town or village. In spots may have slower curves. Possible as you get north of Champaign or Kankakee traffic may be better. Not sure of construction on I-57 & I-74 in Champaign to make a bottleneck.

I like to use US 24 west to IL 47 then north to Dwight. 2 lane blacktop with little traffic. Probably too early for farmers to be out with their tractors. Most of these highways are straight & flat for miles.

I went to the last one near Carbondale in the totality and it was incredible...until I tried to drive home. The traffic was the worst I've ever seen, It took me six hours to get to I-64 which normally would be a forty five minute drive. I finally got off the main highway and found IL 130 was devoid of traffic and took that home. But if you are not in the totality it's pointless. Within a few seconds when the moon fully covered the sun it went from just an ordinary day to the stars out and these weird white flames sticking out on either side of where the sun would be.

I'm considering driving to see the eclipse, but I'll be driving into Indiana to see it. But after hearing intense traffic stories and forecasts of clouds east of Indy(and not gonna lie I worry about crowds and traffic the closer to Indy you get), I'm now looking at small Indiana towns west of Indy to see the eclipse in. Where the cloud clover appears to be less, and I'd probably run into less crowds as well.

Where exactly I go that day to see the eclipse, I don't know. I only know I'm looking at IN towns west of Indy. Wherever you travel to see the eclipse(whether that is in Illinois or Indiana), I hope you have a good and safe travel to see the eclipse!

New concern regarding chance of clouds or rain coming in. Big concern for Dallas & Texas. May just be cloudy Monday in IL. Appears to be good chance of storms into Wednesday.
Pay attention to your local weather forecast. Need clear skies for best eclipse viewing.

Heaviest rain & storms may be in Texas spreading east into Mississippi.

I work at a Subaru dealership in Illinois, a bit outside the "totality" zone. We got a memo earlier this week that the parts warehouse in Lebanon Indiana, which is in the totality zone and services many states in the midwest, will not be making their normally scheduled deliveries this coming Monday, citing DHS warnings about massive traffic overload on primary, secondary, and even tertiary roads.
