The main spots in NE Oregon would be La Grande (including Cove and south of there on Catherine Creek branches), Joseph / Enterprise (and the Lostine River Valley and Minam River). Less noticed would be areas around John Day Oregon.
Go out I-84 or go to Bend and take 26. Or for even more backroad take Hwy 74 thru Heppner and play around with the finish.
You can proceed to southern Idaho and then strike north. Depends on how much time you have and how many targets you pick.
