RUDENESS.

Hmm....I moved to and lived in New York City for a few years, and I didn't think they were rude at all. I thought people were extremely helpful, honest, straight-forward, and mostly GENUINE.

I've been to Miami and didn't pick up on any rudeness...just seemed like a sunny place all in all.

I do read the boards where people constantly toss around the strereotype of the rude New Yorker. If Miami is filled with New Yorkers, to me, that makes it an even better place. New York City is a great city filled with great people.

I'm a legal assistant and my husband is a Pipe Fitter. We both make about 170K between the 2.

Thanks Tiger - I hope you are not being sarcastic. I think this is a pretty great place too with a lot of both great and not so great people. It has just become very hard to get by here - hard to save to by the home of your grandmother's dreams (my dream home isn't attainable here). The good thing about Florida are the homes, the bad things is the pay. I hope I find a happy median.

You can, just do your homework (which you're doing). And I wouldnt limit myself to S FL. Or just FL for that matter.

I have several friends that are Union pipe fitters-in a good year they'll make 60K, but that's not the norm in Florida. Work is real slow for them but if Progress Energy builds the nuke like they want to, they'll need tons of fitters.

My experience:
1.) The department I work for at UM is going through a major "reorganization," in which nearly all of the administrative staff was let go, effective the same day. Hiring and payroll freeze still very much in effect.
2.) Someone I know went to an interview for Spirit Airlines flight attendent. Spirit airlines is a low-cost, no-frills airline (and I suspect pays low salaries as well). Majority of applicants were middle-aged former flight attendents from national airlines like Northwest, Delta, and American.
3.) Almost nobody is hiring at Miami airport, where my wife volunteers, well...except for aircraft maintenance.

Note: UM and the airport are among the largest employers in the County.

Summary: Job market still looks pretty bleak.

I value everyone's opinion, but a valid opinion. Why is it that people feel it necessary to put such a sour spin on everything. Yes, I completely understand that you may think that the rude outnumber the nice, but seriously there has to be some good along with bad. I feel like there is only one extreme. Either really nice or really rude. The nice has to be overly nice to compensate for those who hate the place people are questioning.

Can I have objective answers on the job market and housing market there?
Some objective numbers on the job market:

The United States Department of Labor's last set of statistics lists FL as 9th out of 51 (includes Washington DC) for unemployment with an 11.2% unemployment rate. It's not just negativity for the sake of negativity.

The local newspaper just ran a story indicating that foreclosures increased 15% in November 2009 when compared to November 2008.

I am sure it is a great time to buy if you have money to do so, but IMO the negativity about the local economy is justified.

As far as rude people, there are rude people everywhere.
