Amy, I answered you in the separate thread you started on this issue. My guess is that a combination of money and AH's generous scholarships coupled with many outstanding programs is at the root of it.

Yay! How old are your kids? What do they like to do? Make sure you see classrooms with kids of their age. See the dance studio and the photo lab, the main theater and the black box theater/gallery, the band room and the pottery room - there is even a room for stage make-up! There is a LOT to see, so make sure you see the parts where you think your kids will hang out. We actually ruled out the school when the kids were in 1st grade because they had a neglected little library. Now they have a library that rivals any local public library complete with a bazillion computers. The sports facilities are amazing. It's really set up like a college campus, actually. Enjoy the tour!

To add an alumna's point of view...I graduated from PC in '93 and my husband in '89. We both attended Ivy League undergrads. I am a writer with a prominent NGO (I have a master's) and he is a physician. We both feel that we received an excellent education at PC and were very competitive with the students from the traditional New England boarding schools whom we encountered in college.

At the time, there certainly was a lot of wealth (From the alumni magazine, it looks like things haven't changed.) At 16, kids had more expensive cars than I drive at age 33! My husband did not come from a wealthy family (he had loans and academic scholarship); however, it really didn't make a difference to him. He had plenty of friends, was involved in art and music and studied hard.

If your kid is grounded and you help him/her understand that there is another world outside of private school in Ft. Lauderdale, you can feel fairly certain that he/she will get an excellent education and will be well-prepared for college and career.

Hope that helps.Good luck with your decision.

Question American Heritage x Pinecrest School

Hi!!! Which school is better academically, socio-emotional American Heritage or Pinecrest? How are the students in each of them? Do you have a lot of bullying or do you respect friends from different socioeconomic, racial, etc. Can you help me? What is the difference between an A grade public school and a private school? Are all extracurricular activities like arts, sports, music included in tuition or are they paid separately? I come from Brazil and the teaching system is different? I would like to learn how it works around here. My daughter attends an A - 4th grade public school on the advanced learn (gifted program), but we are considering Pinecrest and American Heritage for her to study. What you can share your experiences would help me a lot. Also which is the difference between public school ‘A’ and private school?
thank you!!!
