Fort Lauderdale is a popular tourist destination. Along with that comes heavy traffic, bicyclists, pedestrians, etc. If you can't handle it, maybe you should vacation in Nowheresville U.S.A.

Maybe because I lived there for 18 years I felt like it was going to be more memorable?

I wasn't on vacation, I was helping a relative move out of an 8 million dollar home in Harbor Beach!

I disagree. City Guy said he lived in Fort Lauderdale for 18 years so it is natural to feel a certain way when going back home, if you will. City Guy stated he was helping a family member there. I go back to my home town and people are warm and friendly even though I no longer know anyone anymore.

I think you had unreasonable expectations. The 17th Street/Harbor Beach area is known as being ground zero for tourists getting off of the cruise ships. The area is filled with restaurants that tourists frequent. There are very few full-time residents in that section.

To me, despite the tourists, the area is very nice and is frequented by a higher class of people than other areas of Fort Lauderdale. What exactly made you feel so uncomfortable? You were there to move someone out of a house, not to socialize. What did you expect?

Did you go anywhere besides Starbucks? I feel uncomfortable whenever I step foot into a Starbucks regardless of which city. The idea of pretentious people paying $6 for a cup of coffee and hanging out for hours on wifi without looking at anyone or talking to anyone kind of makes me sick.

He complained about tourists and transients. Not locals. He visited a tourist area that is known for being such. Locals usually avoid this area for that reason. If I visit the Vegas Strip, I don't expect to encounter warm and friendly locals or that the red carpet be rolled out for me.

He also lived here 18 years 30+ years ago. Fort Lauderdale has changed a lot since then. Fort Lauderdale is/has never been a ranch in New Mexico. I really don't understand the comparison. If you want a rural ranch, move to New Mexico or Kansas.

Fort Lauderdale is overpopulated yes and when I moved here 16 years ago from SFO I clearly remember the traffic was not this bad. One day, not during any rush hour period, I had to wait for four light changes at the intersection of Commercial and Federal before I could cross. Sorry but that is ridiculous and yes I was steaming. Didn't happen in the early 2000s. My best guess as to why the traffic is so bad is 1) South Florida is and has never stopped growing despite 2) the land hasn't increased in size nor has the infrastructure. Public transportation is spotty at best so car is the way to go for nearly everyone.

3) Lights aren't properly synchronized

Per Wiki (link below), the City of Fort Lauderdale's population in the 2010 census was 165,521.

In 2000, it was 152,397.
In 1990 it was 149,238
In 1980 it was 153,279

So in 30 years, the population has increased a whopping 9%. Some overpopulation. As I said earlier, the city is underdeveloped and is just now starting a commercial boom that was delayed 10 years due to the recession.

As far as you getting delayed at Commercial 4 cycles, that is a rare event. There must have been an accident. That happens everywhere in America.

Lol, talk about cherry-picking data! Ft Laud is hugely affected by the massive development in Broward County since 1980.

Also, I love it when people excuse bad experiences with public servoces by saying "That happens everywhere in America.", Lol, as if they are experts on what happens "everywhere in America".
