I’m not the one claiming they’re top two but for those interested in some reading and stats about bigger players n the state economy-

The Disney study that everyone on the first few pages of Google results seems to quote is underwritten by Disney but still seems reasonably credible. About a $40 Billion impact, most of it in central Florida.

https://disneyconnect.com/disneyworl...rd%20Economics.

I found references to a 2011 study describing as Disney being responsible for 2.5% of the economic activity in the state. While the percentage may not be huge, in a state this size, it’s significant cash money.

‘Federal government spending’ is going to be pretty slippery when it comes to indirect or direct and whether you include Medicare and such or not. But if you want to poke around in other areas, Department of Defense spending was over $30 billion in FL in 2021-

Another interesting fact sheet on how the USDA supports Florida farmers and rural areas, though they don’t break it down by year-

If Florida could get rid of Disney and Big Sugar we'd be in a much better place both economically and environmentally. Both would be replaced with a more integrated options.

If Disney left they would leave a 'void' for a short period of time... same with big sugar. Disney has also received financial benefits because of the Reedy Creek special district, that Disney abused. However the only other place in the (continuous) US who's weather could support Disney operations, would be Texas. And big sugar... (cane sugar) would just disappear, because they're US sponsored welfare queens who without price supports, is not a profitable business.

Both entities are corrupt, entitled, environmental abusers inside the State of Florida.

If you want corrupt and poor managers of money, there is no bigger culprit in the USA than the civilian contracting side of the Department of Defense. It’s amazing how callous those folks are with taxpayer money.

I think that if Disney had never happened, Orlando would have ended up similar to Gainesville or Ocala- a reasonably pleasant but somewhat sleepy small metro area that people tended to pass over/pass by because it s too far from the beach.

The federal government by in large are poor money managers. However... since this thread is about taxes in Florida I'll save my thoughts for another day.

Both Disney and Big Sugar do not pay their appropriate amount of property taxes... especially Disney.

I agree with the OP's post #5:

"I think some goals of this are to:

-Lower the overall tax load for Florida residents who own their homes.

-Lower the cost of home ownership for new familes, low-income families, & retirees on fixed incomes.

-Simplify tax collections. The Property tax system is complex & onerous. Rather than 10M homeowners paying taxes, it could be cut to 35k retailers.

-Shift more tax burden to tourists/visitors who use our infrastructure w/o paying enough. Tourist taxes are insufficient."

I don't think Florida is trying to raise overall tax revenues, they've already got a huge cash surplus. I think they're trying to achieve the goals above. The State has gone silent since the initial press release, so we'll have to wait and see where it goes.
