I had to look at that a few times to be sure....

the crossing arms did not come down.....the train was already across the road...in front and past him....when he ran into the train

A car was already stopped at the tracks, so he decided it would be a good idea to go around by driving on the wrong side of the road... To then run into a speeding train.

I just rewatched it myself... Pause at 1:35. You can see him going around the crossing arm.

I really don't get it.

Everyone discounts the possibility it was done intentionally. They may have been fighting in the car, driver saw the train coming, and the deed was done. Maybe he hoped to take out everyone with him.

I live near an active railroad line and a few times a year there are collisions that are declared suicides. Seems like a horrifying way to go.

Well, when you're young and stupid... I was about 18 and came up on some railroad tracks that were dinging in the warehouse part of town and there were no arms at this crossing. I looked left, I looked right, and then decided to go across. What I didn't know and didn't see (because it was dark), was that the tracks curved around from behind a building. I was halfway across when that train made the curve and it was like looking up into the eye of God. I will never, ever, go across tracks when the bells are dinging even with no arms down, ever again. To this day, I almost come to a complete stop at regular train crossings, looking up and down the tracks even when there's no lights flashing or bells ringing. People get mad at me and honk, and I don't care. That was a scared straight lesson I'll never forget.

Growing up we also had a lot of crossings that had lights but no gates.

Down the street from my house was one of these. Two young high school girls waited for the train to go by and when it did although the lights were still flashing they did not realize there was a train coming in the opposite direction that was hidden by the train that had already passed by. So they pulled out.

These were Amtrak trains that traveled at 75 MPH. It pushed them over a mile and they were killed instantly. Honestly I might of done the same thing had I been in their position.

I never understand those that go around the gates. At least with them putting up four gates it should take away the opportunity for stupid drivers to kill themselves.
