Recently, I'm finding myself in conversations with more and more people over moving out of the Sunshine State mostly due to financial issues and concern over sustainability. I know half of you would like to get rid of most of the Covid-Era transplants anyway. What's your guess for the next HOT SPOT where people will relocate to ?

Next hot spot? Wherever it's not cold will be the general answer you get.

I don't see the main hot spots changing anytime soon. The past hot spots if anything are getting more extreme in the issues that pushed people away. Until sanity returns in those areas, I don't see the current hot spots changing.

That article was written in 2017 BEFORE relocation to Florida really went off the charts.
IMHO Florida will remain a popular place but with a different demographic. Gone will be the economically struggling elderly people looking to be away from the northeast. They will be replaced by upper middle class working age people who can handle the increased costs of Florida.

The return to the office trend should be a temporary boom for the cities that lost everyone during Covid.

With global warming, I feel like the Great Lakes rust belt will begin to see a revival in earnest. Winter sucks but will get more mild, and summer is downright pleasant.

My sister grew up in Michigan and now lives in California. When she gos out to vineyards or produce stands there, she discovers a surprising number of people who are looking to relocate an agricultural operation to western Michigan- the climate is very good for summer produce and wine grapes, but most importantly, you effectively never have to worry about after rights and water tables there, unlike California.

We were out doing a scouting trip to Colorado a few weeks back, and it seemed like there wee huge tracts of new suburban developments just off every highway interchange. Front Range winters are actually pretty mild- plenty of days in December when Denver is warmer than Pensacola, and they get a lot of sunny weather.

Give it 20-30 years, and Fort Collins and Denver will indeed start to become one with all the new development.

The PNW is also on our moving list but 45F and drizzling is the Spousal Unit’s least favorite kind of weather and since that’s a typical winter day there, it might be a dealbreaker.

I like the PNW a lot. Between all the national parks, the San Juan Islands, and upscale cities like Bellevue it’s pretty great. No state income tax in Washington either. It’s my favorite spot in the United States.

Colorado isn’t bad, but I’ve been much less taken by it than a lot of other people.

You’re looking for somewhere with mountains I take it?

Yeah- we’ve done Great Lakes and salt water and are ready for a change like that. The desert (Albuquerque, Tucson, Las Vegas, etc.) strikes us as a really cool place to visit but a little sparse as a place to live for 40+ weeks of the year and then there’s the water situation. (The Front Range of Colorado has some water rights issues concerns, but it doesn’t seem to be nearly as problematic as some other parts of the Southwest.)
