There's a big difference between a talk show host or the "Onion" making such a joke and a US senator. I'm astonished there are some people who don't seem to understand the distinction.
Yup. A US Senator making fun of an organization that represents a minority, after having proven himself to be a racist - is no surprise. At all. And people who laugh at that "joke" are equally racist. Racism and ignorance tend to go hand in hand; people who are racist typically are unaware of the fact. They've been indoctrinated since children and sincerely don't know any better.

Rick Scott issues travel advisory for ‘socialists,’ warning Florida is ‘openly hostile’ to them

"According to the release, the formal travel notice says "Florida is openly hostile toward Socialists, Communists, and those that enable them" and that before "traveling to Florida, please understand that the state of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by Socialists and others who work in the Biden Administration."

"Let me be clear – any attempts to spread the oppression and poverty that Socialism always brings will be rebuffed by the people of Florida," Scott, the former governor of Florida, said. "Travelers should be aware that attempts to spread Socialism in north Florida will fail and be met with laughter and mockery."

"However, in much of Central and South Florida, the situation is far more dangerous for Socialists, as they may encounter people from Cuba, Venezuela, and other parts of Central and South America and the Caribbean who have direct knowledge of, and experience with, the horrors of Socialism," he continued."

Socialists is a term in right wing speak for anyone who favors not selectively utilizing the US Constitution and each of its amendments.

Socialism is just another microtone on the world's most melodious dog whistle.

It does, but not in the US.

If it did everyone would have equal access to healthcare and senior care, 10% of the population wouldn't control 70% of the wealth, education would be free through college, adequate public transit would exist most everywhere along with a free market minus monopolies.

Right wingers use it like a curse word weirdly enough but guess not so weird given the selfishness so ingrained in GOP-lover characteristics.

Are we speaking of socialism as a concept or socialism as Rick Scott used it?

Great post overall…but far too factual for most hardcore right wingers. There is nothing sadder than seeing a working class or even a middle class republican - a complete oxymoron…they don’t benefit much from any policies aside from culture war distractions.

One correction however - Socialism does indeed exist in the US. There have been many instances of “socialist” policies implemented - It is however reserved for only the elites.

Auto industry bailouts, bank bailouts, PPP Loans with forgiveness for companies who then hoarded cash and in turn had record profits with less payroll etc. These are just a few examples that most on the right refuse to acknowledge.

This current economic climate WAS NOT started by Biden’s or even Trump’s administration handing out $1,200 stimulus checks…in fact I believe there is a coordinated effort by corporations to force a recession…Not sure if this is the place for it, but I can elaborate further if there is any interest.
