Homeless also congregate where they are allowed to, & not harassed by law enforcement...where laws regulating them, and the willingness to enforce those laws is lacking.

That is NOT Florida, Florida is nothing like CA & WA in that regard.

Homelessness in FL will increase with soaring rents. Apparently this is a radical and controversial idea?

"Florida has the third-largest homeless population in the country. Economists say the lack of affordable housing is the primary factor leading to homelessness here in the Sunshine State."
https://mycbs4.com/news/local/florid...-data-released

"Florida has among the highest year-over-year rent increases; in fact only three cities in the country saw rent increases of 30% or more – and all three are in Florida. Florida has the highest percentage of cost burdened renters in the country. The lack of affordable housing is the primary cause of homelessness."
https://www.myflfamilies.com/service...ort%202022.pdf

"A surge in housing costs in the Tampa Bay region has led to an increase in the number of homeless people in Hillsborough County, according to new data from the Tampa Hillsborough Homeless Initiative. It has become tremendously difficult to find affordable housing."
https://www.businessobserverfl.com/a...n-homelessness

"The housing crisis and the worst inflation in four decades have helped drive up the number of homeless people in Manatee County and nationwide. Homelessness is up 25% in Manatee County since this time last year. More than 65% of those are homeless for the first time. Wages are failing to keep up with higher rents, according to several studies."

Locals, business owners concerned over St. Augustine’s rising homeless population. A city spokesperson says police “enforce,” but added that there’s “not a whole lot to enforce.” The city acknowledged “they have every right to be there.” St. Augustine Police Department says they have outreach officers that help those who are homeless, but that they “can only do so much” when it comes to people wanting help.

Rise in rent leads to rise in homelessness in Central Florida. Housing crisis leads to increase in homelessness across Central Florida.

Working-class families are getting priced out of their apartments into homelessness. In South Florida, more working-class people are finding themselves in what housing experts call “situational homelessness” as wages remain stagnant, rents boom and they are priced out of the rental market. Some are having to live out of their cars, saving up some money for a day or two per week at a motel, or staying in 24-hour parking lots. “We are seeing a new class of people that are homeless. It’s families who haven’t really had an interruption in their income, but are being displaced because landlords have raised their rents significantly,” said Linda Taylor, CEO of H.O.M.E.S, a division of HANDY, a nonprofit in Broward County.

'Working homeless' increase with Florida rental costs. "Housing prices continued to skyrocket and now you have people who actually are employed that are homeless," Essaye said. "If you have people who are employed yet cannot afford to live or rent in your community — that’s a big red flag. The policy makers have to get together with the builders and with the developers and say we have to try and tackle this crisis and find a way where we can prevent essentially a California-style mess."

Advocates warn about Fla.’s affordable housing crisis. “If you’re not worried about our housing market, if you’re not worried about our homelessness, our families living in homelessness then take a look at California because that’s us in the future.”
https://www.abcactionnews.com/news/p...housing-crisis

Homeless shelters strained amid affordable housing crisis in FL. More people turn to homeless shelters amid affordable housing crisis in Central Florida.

Rising home prices and rents have created a tenuous position for Tampa Bay workers, causing a “homeless epidemic and a tsunami coming our way,” according to Eleanor Saunders, executive director of the Emergency Care Help Organization (ECHO), serving 12 communities in southeastern Hillsborough County. “Honestly,” Saunders said, “it’s a perfect storm.”
https://www.observernews.net/2022/01...concerns-rise/

According to new data released by the U.S. Council on Homelessness, Florida has the third-largest homeless population in the country. Native and newcomer Floridians definitely didn’t ask for Florida to earn the unfavorable title of “The least affordable place to live in the United States”.

I see very few homeless people here in SW Florida, which tells me Florida's not-for-profits, mostly churches, are doing a great job at housing them.

Seems to me like there's a lot more compassion here in Florida, than in states where you see homeless people lying, & camping out in makeshift shelters all over the streets...like Cali, Or, NY, & WA.

I have not seen 1 person lying on a street, or a commercial area, or park, or any tents belonging to "urban campers" in SW Florida. I'm not saying none exist, but I'm not seeing them in Southern Sarasota County.

Maybe ours are better at staying out of sight?

Its nowhere near the issue here in FLA tht it is in the aformentioned states...we are doing better at dealing with them imho.

just a different demographic I guess...

Florida ranks 17th on the amount of homeless....~27,500....but they tend to be scattered all over the state..Florida doesn't have those long streets of homeless like you see in LA, Seattle, NY etc

New York ranks #1 with almost 100,000...~91,300....but they tend to gather in just a few hot spots...so they are more visible

California has over 150,000 homeless...~161,500....even if only half of them settle in one area...it's a city

The states with the most homeless people are:
1) California
2) New York
3) Florida

In CA, the % of homeless people living in shelters is 29% (mild weather conducive to living outdoors)
In NY, the % of homeless people living in shelters is 95% (harsh winters)
In FL, the % of homeless people living in shelters is 53% (mix of pleasant and harsh weather conditions)

I believe that the astronomical rise of housing costs will be detrimental for the state of Florida. Unaffordable housing comes with serious negative consequences.

I sincerely hope that the trend in housing prices reverses. Steady appreciation of home values and gradual rent increases are perfectly healthy and allow for stability. Out-of-control growth and rapid increases in rent are very disruptive to individual lives as well as the broader community.

Yes, but also includes things that have nothing to do with political party.

California is within the Ninth Circuit and Florida is not........

They're standalones. Their long progressive, free-spirited vibe (like SF) keep many younger idealists hanging out. If one takes notice of the typical homeless person in other big cities you'll see the difference.
