So is this a thread about the current issues of blue-green algae in Florida coastal waters or a Gov. Scott bashing thread?

Two guesses, the first doesn't count.

For manym bashing the one they do not like is all they do here. The subject is not actually important to them, it is just an excuse to post a bash.

Tourism and the beauty of the coastline and everglades is the best thing about Florida. If the ecology of Florida is ruined you will see a mass exodus of people fleeing to other states. Tourism will die.

I saw on the news last week about yet another cancer cluster where chemicals that have contributed to cancer is in the groundwater in Satellite beach and has been for years.

Cancer cluster scares will ruin real estate. Florida has identified cancer "hot spots" for men in eight counties: St. Lucie; Osceola; Citrus; Sumter; Herando; Marion; Sarasota and Glades counties.

I'm seeing tons of posts on travel forums from vacationers and future booked vacationers saying they are leaving early and canceling their trips. Residents saying they can smell the decay from their homes 7 miles away from the beaches.

<< But when nutrients levels are high, increases in temperature of just a few degrees can result in exponential increases in the amount of algae. This presents a challenge for those who aim to control blooms. In the future, it is clear that water temperatures will be higher due to climate change. In fact they have already increased over the last 100 years. It will be much more challenging to control algae blooms in a warm future than it is today....

At a large scale, reducing the emission of greenhouse gases in order to slow the warming of the earth’s atmosphere and the water in the ocean, lakes and rivers is an important part of the solution to prevent more severe algae blooms in the future. However, it is becoming apparent that warming will occur by at least 2 degrees Celsius over the next 75 years. We know that this will lead to more extreme blooms where high nutrient levels already allow them to occur.

<<The three IPCC projections to the end of this century indicate that under all future climate scenarios, there will be warming of ocean surface waters at our latitude, ranging from 1 to 3 degrees Celsius. This amount of warming, on top of what already has occurred, could affect the geographic occurrence, growth rates, and effects (such as toxicity) of marine organisms (Burge et al. 2014).>>

<<Warming air and water temperatures may make algae blooms more common, since toxic blue-green algae prefer warm water. The algae is made up in part of toxic cyanobacteria, which, when present in large enough numbers, can deplete the oxygen in the water to create so-called "dead zones" in the water column below.

NOAA algal bloom specialist Richard Stumpf said that in Florida and other warm climates, blooms can last all year.

Perhaps year-round algal blooms finally will tip the political balance in Florida away from anti-environment, science-denying politicians.

I am very glad for this. This is the ONLY THING that will wake people up in this state as to the ecological catastrophe under way.

I could care less about whoever is in charge. I just want Florida politicians to DO SOMETHING about the ecological disaster unfolding in my home state. Rick Scott has been a particularly BAD leader when it comes to protecting Florida's natural resources. He could be a Republican or a Democrat I could care less. We need immediate action before it is too late.

The IPCC originally made that prediction in 1990...and repeated it word for word in all of their following reports.
The only problem is....the Gulf of Mexico did not get the memo and did not get warmer

Unfortunately this has been years in the making and to believe there’s a politician on either side who cares is naive.
Look into who has recently and is currently selling their waterfront homes.

Just heartbreaking.

What is this, a Russian disinformation campaign and website??? Due to the Russian economy's heavy dependence on fossil fuel production, and its northern latitude, Putin has opposed action on climate change.

Op-ed: Putin, Trump and rejected greatness – High North News

Personally, I've often thought that Trump's anti-climate change rhetoric was further proof that he has been compromised by Putin, as U.S. government agencies and even the armed forces identified climate change as a major threat to national security before the Great Censorship was imposed by the Trump administration. No Wharton School graduate could be that ignorant.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...urity-strategy

<<[Secretary of Defense James] Mattis has long espoused the position that the armed forces, for a host of reasons, need to cut dependence on fossil fuels and explore renewable energy where it makes sense. He had also, as commander of the U.S. Joint Forces Command in 2010, signed off on the Joint Operating Environment, which lists climate change as one of the security threats the military expected to confront over the next 25 years.>>

If you go to any reputable website and check out ocean warming, you'll find significant ocean warming, especially in the Gulf of Mexico, since 1990, and more especially of the deep ocean.

This chart only goes through 2015, and doesn't comprehend the "freakishly" warm GOM temperatures in subsequent years.

Gulf of Mexico waters are freakishly warm, which could fuel strong spring storms - Chicago Tribune

Of course, climate change deniers turn a blind eye to empirical data, the bedrock of scientific analysis, and the evidence of climate change, including mass destruction of the environment even in their own backyards.
