Yappy dogs and nosey old women are excellent crime deterrents. People need to get together, meet their neighbors, talk, and look out for one another. It may not be the easiest solution, but it beats running away from the problem.
Ellie,

That the spirit!!!!! We must confront our devils and take charge. Running makes it worst...

That sounds all nice and all, but how is that going to help you when the lowlife is in your house, holding you at gun point and threatening to kill you.

It's sad, but Florida has gone down the tubes with all the low life scum that is attracted here.

Yes, I'm a NRA member, and I'll make my own life decisions on my own terms. Me, and only me are responsible for my safety and survival. Not the police. Not the government. Most certainly, not my neighbors.

I made a decision to leave this place because it's feels like a third world country down here in Broward and Dade. I'm devastated leaving my father, but my safety is paramount, and even carrying a gun with me everywhere is no guarantee to survival.

Safety comes first.
Are you on the Chamber or Commerce or Board of Tourism for Oil City, lol?

Florida has PLENTY of safe communities. Northwest Florida has a bunch.... and my experience is only with Southeast Florida....

Palm Beach is safe (the Island), as is Palm Beach Gardens and Jupiter. Travel up the Coast and you're in safe territory: Hobe Sound, Stuart, Jensen Beach, Port St. Lucie, (Don't live in Fort Pierce, lol), Vero Beach, Melbourne.... I have never heard of awful crime in any of these areas. Further South of Palm Beach County I'm not so sure about, but I think the further West you go, generally, you'll find more suburban, quieter areas than the older, busier areas near the coast: Wellington, Plantation, etc. etc...

Stay out of the inner-city areas and you're fine. Victims of murders are overwhelmingly always those involved in drugs and crime themselves. The outlying West Palm Beach area can be sketch, and will continue to be so until developers buy up and raze the entire area outside of City Place.

Lightbulb Let's start with the dictionary. Webster defines "gang" this way:

maybe good and concern individuals can do the same on a positive way!!!

"gang n [ME, walking, journey, fr. OE; akin to OE gangan] (15c) 1 a (1): a set of articles: outfit (2): a combination of similar implements or devices arranged for convenience to act together b: group: as (1): a group of persons working together (2): a group of persons working to unlawful or antisocial ends; esp: a band of antisocial adolescents 2: a group of persons having informal and usu. close social relations."

Does sound familiar, our constitution was created by a group of people working together

When I put "gang member" into my Roget's Thesaurus in my Microsoft Bookshelf program, I came up with this:

"bad person, evil person, no saint, sinner, hardened sinner, limb of Satan, Antichrist, evildoer, fallen angel, backslider, recidivist, lost sheep, lost soul... one without morals, immoralist reprobate, scapegrace, good-for-nothing, ne'er-do-well, black sheep, scallywag, scamp, rake...profligate, libertine, wanton, hussy, loose woman..., outcast, dregs, riffraff, trash, white trash, scum, object of scorn..."

And it went on. When the word "gang" is mentioned, we cringe, we become scared, we look for a cop.

I'm all for a no-nonsense, New York under Giuliani style scrubbing of West Palm Beach. It's such a beautiful, historic area and once you get outside the Island/Downtown Flagler/City Place area you're in the deepest of ghetto. What will it take to vote in someone with some Moderator cut: cut to make it happen?

Lol, thanks. Since Palm Beach is basically colonized by ex-New Yorkers anyway, what do you think we have to offer Giuliani to run for mayor?

Ok lets check PSL, heck lets check Ocala and northwest Florida crime index:

PSL=200 index, not bad. Ocala=700 very dangerous. Gainsville=525 elevated.
Cape Coral=250. Yes theres safe areas of Florida, PBC not one of them!

Is there a community for a couple looking to rent a home, NOT BUY ONE, to enjoy the sun and snow-free winter while living on a modest salary and be able to not hear their neighbors blasting bass-based noise or beer bottles breaking with profanities shouted?

People who know about Florida and live there and are not completely biased against living there... can you please answer...

Thank you.
After 5 years in Orlando, I can say Orlando is NOT your choice. Lake Mary, is still safe... for the most park. Compared to Orlando, it's heaven, but surely, you have to be on your guard. Windermere is nice, but a long commute from most jobs.

As for "profanities shouted by drunken/crazy neightbors"... well this one is a toughie. I will tell you about some neighborhoods where this happens daily in the Orlando metro area (a massive, ever sprawling metro area which covers about 1.2 million people or so):

Where NOT to be in the Orlando area (because of high crime):

1. Pine Hills
2. Paramore
3. Certain areas of Winter Park... actually, majority of Winter Park, unless you have $2+ million to spend on a nice house in a safe area.
4. The East side of Orlando (most of it, except Waterfod Lake and Avalon Park).
5. Creek's Cove/Tangelo Park/etc (the usual crack spots)
6. Union Park/Eatonville/Lee Road area
7. Sanford
8. Pretty much anywhere downtown Orlando these days (again, unless you have tons and tons of cash)
9. Orange Blossom Trail(OBT)/American Blvd/Oakridge Road/Colonial Drive areas.
10. The Millenia area apts, there are some "cute" apts, but they are government ran and the people living there are rather "barbaric", if I may say.
11. Metro West... we rented there for 6 months, it USED TO be very nice, now it's gone downhill a lot, it's a murder or robbery a day there now.
12. Silver Star Road/Hiawassee (north of Colonial)/Conroy road (certain apts, like Coconut Palms apt, etc)/Raliegh Street (east of Kirkman road).

As you can see, it's pretty much everywhere in Orlando now. You need to look at the outer areas of Orlando for safety. Try Deltona or Lake Mary or Windermere. Again, it all depends on your budget. Check the home prices vs wages BEFORE you even consider moving down.

As for SOUTH FLA, if you do not like crime and like affordable housing, STAY AS FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE FROM SOUTH FLORIDA.

One last word.... NORTH Fla is developing and it's very nice. You should check out St. Augustine; Fernandina Beach, Yulee (sticks), Leesburg, etc - do NOT go to Jacksonville (Jax). Oh, southern GA is nice too, and affordable and they get very little to no snow every year!!

Good luck!
