I assume ALL snakes are dangerous and keep my distance, but I also recognize that the majority are non-venomous and not at all aggressive. I also know that they are good to ahve around because they eat bad things like bugs and rodents.

Those snakes are very dangerous. If that snake tries to talk your wife into eating an apple and making you eat some, too, then you can be in a heap of trouble.

Get a shovel and kill it, right away. Or buy a pet mongoose.

I have seen those black snakes around my house too. As long as they are not INSIDE my house, I just let them go about their business. I have noticed, though, since I have seen them around there are a lot less lizards around. I thought my daughter's cat got the lizards, but maybe it was the snakes.

I have a wooded backyard kinda and they are all over. I see many of them occasionally. I looked out the back door last week and saw my Lab tossing something up in the air and playing. As I got closer it was a black racer and she had killed it. Now I know why she is digging huge holes all over by the bushes and why she wants to go out so often.

killing a Eastern Indigo can land you in jail, they are protected by the federal under the Endangered Species Act, they are also protected by the State of Florida. When we lived in FL there were several Indigos that lived in a orange grove behind our house. They are harmless, some will just lay there and let you pick them up.

It's probably a ring-necked snake, which is different from a black racer (no ring). It's quite harmless.
