I prefer NOT to see men carry "tote" bags.. Women carry the bags.. men have always either carried what they needed in their pockets or in a briefcase....
wallet,
keys,
cigarets (if they smoke)
i-phone
i-pad,
i-pod
pens
tissues
medication
glasses
sun glasses
shall I go on...
If I'm just going out to a bar or restaurant with friends then no I don't need a bag. But if I am going out of the house all day, I may bring my laptop, a book, a camera, a water bottle, etc. I have no problem carrying these in a messenger bag on those days.
It's sad that some people are that worried about being perceived as 'manly'.
Man bags were a new thing in 1973. It was such a novelty that it was featured in an episode of All in the Family -- "Meathead" came into the room with his "bag" hanging from his shoulder, and Archie and an old-school 220 lb co-worker glared at him, and the audience laughed uproariously.
But that was 41 years ago. Times have changed. Guys think nothing today of carrying tote bags, satchels, fanny packs, etc. Anyone who questions my right to carry my laptop bag on my shoulder is definitely insecure in his masculinity.
Who carries a iPhone, iPad, AND iPod? Most guys I know carry a wallet, keys, and phone. That's it.

Working 36 miles from home I need to carry more than just keys, wallet and phone. Also since I work in an office I have to carry something "sheeple" friendly since a tactical type pack draws too much attention.

People are arguing completely different things. For occasions where that is appropriate yes that is all I carry.
But there are plenty of times I am carrying around things (as mentioned before) like books, my laptop, and a camera, and I can't fit all of those in my pockets. It's as simple as that. *no one* is saying that they carry a bag around for the times they have nothing to carry beyond their wallet, keys, and phone.
Most bikers I see wear a backpack; I can't even fathom what a tote bag looks like on a bike. Maybe they were laughing at the big wire basket on the handlebars, holding said tote bag.
