This isn't entirely accurate; the government can pay off their debt tomorrow if they issue a shiny new 1 trillion dollar bill; just need to print 34 of those suckers. Now, it would have consequences, like making the U.S. dollar worth less than an Iranian Rial with hyperinflation it would cause, but technically, they could do it.

The USD doesn't have to collapse for the world to have another reserve currency in the future.
The only potential candidate is the Yuan which has barely moved in a generation. But if it does continue to rise, there should be plenty of room for the USD in a larger future global economy.
I think USD will be replaced by not just by some other reserve currency but probably by some Central Bank digital currency (CDBC) as well.
The Spanish real and Roman currencies are no longer in use for historical references.

True, but after the dust settled the German Mark was a strong and stable currency in the world until they converted over to the Euro. The demise of the Dollar doesn't mean the demise of America or the world.

Germany had foreign debt owed in those currencies. U.s debt is owed in USD.
Also Germany lost ww1 and had extraordinary negative provisions in the treaty of Versailles to punish them. Which of course, wasn’t the best idea in hindsight.
