We just recently got our new dog from a rescue, a cute little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. However, when we got her home we realized that she doesn't want to play very much-- or move around at all for that matter. In fact she stays fairly still most of the day. She doesn't bark or make noise either. Sometimes she will move her head around but thats about it. We have tried toys, dog treats and everything, but she just doesn't seem interested in interacting at all (although she will eat the dog treats). I get the feeling she may be frightened in her new environment.
The owner she was rescued from used to keep her in a crate for long periods of time. So maybe this has something to do with how timid she is.
1. How would you recommend we get her to relax and perhaps be more playful?
2. Does this sound abnormal and should we take her to the vet?
Congratulations on adopting a rescue! I agree with the above posters. I can't help but think a lot of it is due to having spent so much time a crate in her prior situation.
My 5 y.o. Cavalier sleeps most of the day at my feet - I telecommute and stay on the computer all day at home. However, he's quite lively when we go for walks, and barks and "dances" for his treat when we come back inside. He has a play time most evenings when he likes to play catch and retrieve with his squeaky toys.
Time and patience should do a world of good for your new little girl.
