Hi dog people
Thanks to everyone who gave support to me and my pooch after the dog attack.
I have a question.
My dog is scheduled to have her stitches removed on Friday.
In one place she has just one stitch and on her neck a few more but i'm not sure how many.
It'll be 10 days on Friday.
The low tides are way low (necessary for good walking) tomorrow and Friday and we've had a horrific week due to the attack and issues that followed (with landlords - but that has been resolved).
Her wounds look good to me, her spirit has been as high as ever since the attack, eyes bright, etc., and she's got one more day on the antibiotics.
Can we please go to the beach?
What are the risks in doing this given the wounds look good to me (of course i'm not a vet).
Please tell me what i want to hear.
I'm kidding (sort of) but seriously, it's been a rather beach-less summer, there is only about another month until the rains come ... just gotta go.
Can we, can we?
What do you think?
thanks.

I would call the vet to be certain. Maybe he'll suggest putting an oily ointment on first, such as vasoline.
Luck.
When my dude gets board, the beach it is too. He tires = I'm happy.

Skin typically heals in 7 - 10 days. My guess would be that once the stitches are out she should be good to go for playing on the beach. Maybe when you're at the vet's for the suture removal you can ask if there are any additional precautions you should take?

i know.
but the stitches won't come out until friday afternoon and we want to go to the beach tomorrow and friday ... this will be before the stitch removal (which will be later in the afternoon on friday).
she was stitched up last monday night ... the 13th i think ... tomorrow will be the 24th so by tomorrow she will have had 9 1/2 days with the stitches.

yes, she goes in the water.
of course.
what's the risk though?
if the wounds are healed, i would think the ocean water (which is clean ... well is anything really clean anymore?) would be good for the wounds.
my landlady is a nurse although she hasn't practiced for a long time but she thought it would be o.k. ... that maybe the stitches would "draw up" / tighten a bit but they're coming out on friday anyway.

Is the ocean water in Santa Cruz really that clean? I know down her in Santa Barbara the bacteria counts tend to be quiet high at times and we get surfers coming in with infections quite often. So I would make sure that the wound is 100% healed.

it depends on which beach in the county.
we go to a beach on the southern part of the county so it's not impacted like other beaches in santa cruz proper and capitola which can get kinda yucky at times.
i've never seen a warning where we go whereas at other beaches points north ... more impacted, etc., i have.
i dunno.
i suppose i probably shouldn't but man ... we need some joy (we need some ocean!) after a miserable week and a half and the wounds look good and closed.
