My cockapoo puppy is almost 5 months old. He is pretty laid back and calm except for around 7pm at night he gets completely crazy! He runs in circles growling, and if my kids are around he charges them, knocks them down, bites them and just goes wild. I usually have to catch him, which is not an easy task, and put him in his cage to calm down. Does anyone else's dog have a bewitching hour? This is the only time of the day I am really afraid to have him around my children who are 5 and 3. Will he outgrow this insane behaviour? Tonite he did it after we had gone for a long walk, came home, ate dinner, etc...so it isn't like he doesn't get enough attention or exercise. I am at a loss and quite frankly can't stand this!
My dog did this (still does sometimes) despite several long walks a day. Suddenly after her dinner it's surge of energy and she's grabbing slippers, trying to get attention by taking papers out of the recycling bin, jumping around and so on.
If you can, walk your dog for a few minutes. Yes, a time out is a good idea. I remember when she was younger, in our other apartment, I was fried by 6:30...I had to clean up after dinner, help my son study and get things ready for the next day, whatever, and here was this Lab/mix puppy going nuts, ripping stuff, just tearing around, being a pain..I'd stick her in the crate for a bit.
She still does it sometimes, especially in winter, but if you wait your puppy will outgrow it.
My idea is they eat then get sugar highs! Most dog foods now are full of carbs & sugar. Give quick energy then drops low. Much like us eating candy or caffine. So feed at a time you can burn the energy BUT changing food can help...read labels or start feeding a more natural foods like RAW
First, speaking from a human medical point, there is NO SUCH THING as a 'sugar high.' Truly.
Second, if your children are at school during the day and the pup doesn't get a lot of running around while they're gone, then he's just being a puppy!
Remember, a tired puppy is a good puppy! Take him for a few long walks during the day!
Have you had the dog tested for diabetes ? Have you walked the dog for a long period of time during the day ? If not then I would suggest the walk first and then the diabetes test if the walking does not take care of it . Please update us if any of this behavior changes .
Ahh, the evening puppy fiesties, that's normal. That last burst of energy, my lab does the same thing. Grabbing whatever he can and then running from me, although I am starting to get him to come now and bring me the item. He just turned a year old and he still tests me to see what he can get away with, stinker.
