Pit bulls are very prone to allergies and skin problems. Corn wheat and soy are frequently a problem, as loveabull said. Chicken may be a problem also. Some people I know have had luck feeding coconut oil, a tablespoon or two a day. You can find it at any grocery. If the skin is really bad and the dog is licking, you may need to use a cone temporarily to help it clear up.
ETA, Benadryl has been useless for 3 different dogs I've owned who have allergies. If the flareup is severe now, you might want to ask for steroids temporarily while you're trying to get it under control. But steroids have a lot of side effects, so I wouldn't use them for long, or use them over and over.

Default dog has rash

my pitbull has been getting a rash on his thigh area, I did some reading and discovered you can use equal parts of apple cider vinegar with water , I put it in a spray bottle..after the 1st. time using the rash was almost completely gone the next morning, and his was bad, was almost bleeding, I had made a vet visit for the next day it was so bad, I cancelled since it was so much better, after 3 days of spraying the area it was gone for good, they say apple cider vinegar gets rid of fungal and bacterial infections, makes it stop itching also..try this before anything else I swear it's a miracle and it costs like a dollar for a whole bottle, make sure its apple cider vinegar though..good luck !

Given that it's a pit, I'd readily suspect a food allergy. If that's the case, it's easily corrected.

If that doesn't turn out to be the case, and some sort of infection (usually bacterial) has been ruled out, it may be a variety of things:
  • Household cleaners used on floors or carpets.
  • Detergents used to wash bedding.
  • Lawn treatment chemicals.
  • Lice, ticks, fleas, ants.
  • Plants.
  • Sand.
  • Sometimes concrete, depending upon mixture of such. Think sidewalks, patios/porches/pavers, and stepping stones.
  • Dog bathing. Bathing too much? Using improper bathing solution (like dish soap)?
  • People food. Even if your dog's kibble/canned is good, what else are they being fed?
  • Is the dog taking any medication? Sometimes a rash could be a side-effect.

If it's not a food allergy a dog may need to stay on antihistimines long term to keep it under control. My GSDs have horrible envoirnmental allergies and are usually (except for a couple of months in the winter) on antihistimine to keep them under cotnrol. Maybe they weren't on the antihistimines long enough.

As someone else said, it could be staph that is resistent to clearing up.

If you can afford it, since it's been a long-term problem, I'd ask your vet to refer you to a doggy dermatologist. The dertmatologist should be able to get it under control.

I tried just about everything with my dog: prednisone, a prescription spray from the vet, two different kinds of shots, hot spot spray, Claritin, Zyrtec, Benadryl, and a couple of other allergy medicines. I started to bathe my dog a few times a month along with washing her bedding every time I bathed her. That helped a little. Eliminating beef and grain-filled dog food helped a lot. I tried giving her fish oil supplements, but that didn't do much. What helped the most was giving my dog a teaspoon of coconut oil everyday. I did this for a year or two. I've since stopped giving it to her because she got tired of it, but she hasn't been breaking out. Maybe she grew out of her allergies. She's now 3.

Oh wow. Thats interesting. So maybe I should try the coconut oil then? Also, I wonder if its the carpet in my home. She destroys bedding so she lays directly on the carpet or in her crate/cage. But then again, what if shes allergic to my parents dog(also in the home) #SoFrustrating!

Try a Traditional Chinese Medicine vet, they can treat it effectively and in a less invasive fashion, antibiotics and steroids are NOT good for the dog.

You friend can find one near him at ahvma.org and click the "find a holistic vet" tab in the middle...make sure it's one who does Traditional Chinese Medicine though.

Pretty Pitt
I have an old english bulldog, she has very sensitive skin. She also loves to tromp through my gardens, and is constantly suffering a rashy belly, sometimes very dark pink. Seasonal.....

I had tried many ointment type things, I was spending a fortune at the Vet, and it rarely worked. Desperate, I tried baby rash ointment...it's the one that consistently soothes and clears it up. I put it on liberally on her whole under belly. I also use a soothing baby wipe on her underbelly, arm pits, anywhere she gets dirty between baths.

I actually found a name brand baby rash ointment at our local dollar store, Baby Butt Aid...I have used more expensive types too, it all works. Any hot spots on her coat, I use pure tea tree oil, found in the multi-cultural/Afro hair grooming section at Walmart....2 bucks. You can spend 15 in a health food store for the same thing.
Hope this helps.
