Your lab could have allergies, There could be an infection in his eyes, ears or nose that could be causing it. It could have a heart problem, COPD. It could be anything. Your best bet is to take the lab to the vet and they can determine what is going on. I don't want to alarm you but, My dog last year was vomiting yellow phlem not to often and just a few months ago he started hacking in the morning and evening or when he gets excited. I took him to the vet and he had to get chest x-rays. The results came back that he has an enlarged heart and COPD. I was devastated but, with the help with two kinds of meds he is doing much better. The vet can put it on a cough suppresant and maybe that will help but, go to the vet is my advice. I hope everything works out for you.
I appreciate your concern but this thread is 3 years old. My dog is fine. I promise you.
I'm glad to hear your dog is doing better. That's great. Your post might help someone else.
Is it kind of like a dry cough hacking noise? Like its about to throw up but doesn't have anything in their throat? My dog has the same problem at the moment. It could be caused by kennel cough if you haven't gotten a vaccine for it. It can also be that it has a foxtail (an outside plant) stuck in its throat which will eventually come out. You can go to the vet although to save the time an money before going, try giving your dog a human cough medicine. Labs can be prime to obesity so if your dog is a little chubbsters you might want to go to the vet for a check up on its heart.
I hope this helped

Did you ever take your pet to the vet to check out the hacking?? My dog has the same symptoms! Curious of what it may be???? Guess I will take him to the vet also!
I never did get to the bottom of his hacking. I remember asking if the hacking was congestive heart failure, but it wasn't. He lived five more years to the ripe old age of 17 years. He died last year of degenerative myelopathy. Totally unrelated to the hacking. I think the hacking was environmental allergies since it wasn't constant and came and went throughout the years
glad to hear it was nothing serious. I have a new puppy and he does the quick fast hack too. SOmetimes when he is playing rough or real excited. Glad to hear your dog lived to 17. 17 is pretty good for a lab. You must of taken real good care of him.
My dog has a hacking coughing problem for two months now at first it was on and off now it is constant it seems as though he’s trying to clear is throat or trying to throw something up but nothing ever comes out. Whatever it is it hasn’t affected is eating or barking he’s a Chihuahua Jack Russel mix

What does the vet say? He needs to at least see a vet to determine if it's anything serious. Is he on heartworm medication?
Heartworm, heart failure, kennel cough, something caught in throat.
Go to vet. Video tape it if possible so you can show vet
