We are empty nesters selling our home in Florida and moving to South Carolina for a change of pace and a more interesting climate.
We are looking for a historic small town with a nice main street with Southern charm. Open to living in town or rural outskirts.
Prefer older houses/neighborhoods over newer construction/developments. Schools do not matter. We both work remote so work is not an issue.
Looking at Newberry this weekend.
Any other places we should consider? Open to pretty much anywhere in the state except extreme west.
Thanks
Newberry is worth looking into - I don't know it outside of her reputation; Aiken is a fantastic match with what you're looking for - although I don't know if it's too far west for your liking.
I strongly disagree with these suggestions unless extreme low cost and isolation are the goals. These towns may certainly have some charm and redeeming qualities, but they are well off the beaten path even by the standards of small towns in South Carolina. These places have little in the way of industry and are far from any sort of urban amenity. Everything from grocery stores to medical care will be at a very low level reflective of the low incomes of the surrounding areas. Saluda County also has the lowest vaccination rate in the state if that matters to the OP.

Abbeville has the historic Burt - Stark mansion. This is where Jefferson Davis decided to give up the civil war.
The tour guide is from Michigan. She said her family came down to visit for some reason. She fell in love with an old home and they moved down soon after.
Abbeville is near Greenwood which has a good amount of industry and amenities. Grocery stores include Ingles, Publix, Food Lion, Walmart supermarket, and a local grocery Corley's Market.
