The OP indicated that they wanted to stay away from the "extreme west" not sure what quadrant of the state they may be referring to but that may be why the locations in the upstate may not have been shared...but maybe they will clarify.
I would second Camden, Newberry, Hartsville, and maybe Georgetown, Walterboro. I would add as honorable mentions Cheraw, Ridgeland, and maybe Conway. If you are looking for "charm" and little else in terms of amenities. You could add Darlington, Marion, Lake City, and Kingstree...
I would steer clear of Georgetown for no reason other than the stench of the paper mill.
I street-viewed Gaffney Sunday, after Gaffney High School won the 5-AAAA state football championship. They have history as a powerhouse. The town’s around 12,000, I think. They planted real trees on Main Street that I’m sure have matured more since the Google Maps camera went through.
Thanks for all the responses. On our trip we needed up in Summerville outside Charleston and really love it.
Lots of suburban traffic, but a pleasant area off metro Charleston. Nexton is a magnet. And there are a couple of new neighborhoods a little farther out in Ridgeville, like Timothy Lakes.
