I've never seen that in our current plate design. I wonder if perhaps you saw or are thinking of a vintage plate design.

Many years ago when we had to exchange our plates every year (because the year was embossed) we used to alternate between tall green mountains (peaks above the numerals) with white text and short mountains (peaks below the numerals) with white sky and green text. These vintage plates can still be used if they are available for both front and back, are in good legible condition, and registered to the correct year vehicle as the year stamped into the plate.

That's the plate I have. It has not been available for many years. Mine has been passed on from vehicle to vehicle.

It seems unnecessary.

Here's the catch, with the new redesigned license plate, the state will get rid of the front plate law. Which means it will join the other 19 states that don't require them. That could be a way for people to vote on it.

I don't think it is due. We had green and white practically 'forever' and they just reversed the colors not too terribly long ago so that the numbers would be easier to read (particularly for law enforcement). The green mountain ones are older plates and they were switched out to increase number visibility. There are plenty of vanity plate choices. I don't really like the idea of a photo background - I like those white mountains with the reflectivity - simple, functional, and a bit classy - not too busy.

No way. I like the license plate design as it stands now. Simple, attractive, and makes a clear statement about what Colorado is. I could see switching the green/white colors again back to the way they were pre-2000, but the design is classic and timeless. These other states' license plates with these elaborate graphics and flat laser printed numbers look cheesy.

If you guys are into nostalgic license plates , keep your old ones until they rust out and become unreadable. CO allows you to register your new vehicle using old plates since you paid for them. I did that when I moved back to CO in 2006 from Washington state, reused old CO plates lying around the house. However, there are other people who want to break from the green/white cycle. Try something new for a change!

This is the plate design that immediately preceded our current plates, so no longer available from the DMV. Yes, you can use them if you can locate a pair in good condition, take them to teh DMV and have them assigned to you vehicle.

Here are some other vintage versions:

'72 was the first use of reflective material, 75/'76 was the first use of date stickers. You also used to be able to tell what county someone was from by the first two letters.

There are an older designs that had no mountains and were just green with white letters, white with green letters and a skier yellow/orange with black letters and black with yellow letters.

IMO,if you want a break from the regular green and white plates, get a designer plate. They use all sorts of colors. There also are all the specialty plates, charity plates, alumni plates, armed forces plates, and so on. I think CO has over 150 variations in color and affiliations if you want something that looks different.
