I felt sorry for the Rockies, the hits just kept coming.

First time I ever heard a commentator say that a player had gone 3 for 3 .... and it was only the 3rd inning.

Well, the Rockies have won 3 games in the last week, so that accounts for something. My local paper is carrying a story from the Denver Post, kind of a help wanted--relief pitchers story. Relief pitchers have been a problem with this club since day 1.

Been a really epically terrible first month for the Rockies. They are already 11.5 games out of first, and they have the second-worst record in the majors.

They are the only team since 1900 to trail at some point in every single one of their first 31 games (they're losing 2-0 to the Marlins as I type this). The previous mark was 29 set by the 1910 St. Louis Browns.

They are the only team in baseball that hasn't won a series yet, and they were tied with the Marlins as the only two teams in baseball without back-to-back wins. The Marlins broke that tie by beating the Rockies the last two games.

There was talk of Bud Black getting an extension before the season, and now there's talk he could get fired before the end of the season. Either way, the Rockies problems don't start in the dugout, they start (and end) in the owner's box.

And they just got swept on the road by the third-worst team in baseball - the Marlins. Miami gets their third straight win. 5-4 in extra innings.

Well, at least they are not as bad as the Marlins are now. They are the worst club in baseball with a 10-30 record , and the Rockies have a 10 and 28 record.

Big whoop-12-28!!

They are not far off if they continue this pace to come close to the 40-120 record the New York Mets had in 1962. Uff-da!

Something lit a fire under the Rockies who've now won 7 in a row and are 15-28.

NY Times has this to say:

Quote:
... the last six wins have come in sweeps of the Padres (22-24) and Rangers (23-22).

Maybe the strangest part of it all: It hasn’t just been some Coors-Field-offense fluke. Yes, their offense has averaged 6.14 runs per game during the streak (the last three games of which have been in San Diego). But their pitching has also been stingy, allowing an average of exactly two runs per game in those seven games. (And while we’re at it, their defense has committed just one error over the seven-game stretch.)

Heading up the hot stretch on the mound: Cal Quantrill, whom the Rockies acquired from Cleveland back in November, and Austin Gomber, who has been with the Rockies since February of 2021 when he headlined the Nolan Arenado trade with St. Louis. Neither is an established star (please, it’s the Rockies) but they’re pitching like they are. In their last two starts each, the pair have combined to allow just three earned runs over 24 2/3 innings.
I attended some of their games in the amazing year-end streak in 2007 where they won 14 of their final 15 regular season games . . . what a season . . . fingers crossed they work their way in to contention in 2024 . . . the team is only 5.5 games behind in the Wild Card race.
