I've read about this on other forums by googling. I am having it happen with my Forte for the last 6 months. Once it was because I bent down and accidentally hit the trunk release on the fob. The other times I did nothing. A few days ago I was in bed at midnight and I heard a thunk, but I was half asleep so I didn't check it out. When I woke up I saw it was my trunk that had opened. It only happens at house late at night. My only thought is that someone has a remote somewhere that has the same frequency as my car trunk. I remember someone called car talk once who had a problem with the automatic car starter turning the car on in the middle of the night and that was their theory. I think the simplest thing to do it put a cinder block on the trunk.

Where do you place the remote FOB ?

Could be mice walking onto the FOB.

I read that Honda has 3,500 different codes for their key fobs. They have sold 200,000 cars so yes, many of them will open another's doors, trunk, or start them up. Fortunately those 200,000 are spread out over 50 states, and with 3,500 codes it really is unlikely that someone near you has the same code. Newer cars use a rolling code that changes every time, for added security. You are just really lucky - or unlucky I guess. I would not leave a block on it. Instead, I would install a lightweight chain and carabiner setup, so that after the remote is clicked, it only open a few inches, then you have to unhook the carabiner to open it the rest of the way.

It's in my pants pocket. At night that's on my dresser. I haven't found any mice or mouse poop in there. Maybe I could put it in a lead container.

Take it to the dealer and tell them they are the ones who have the right equipment to check out their vehicles. And maybe there was a TSB for the problem you have just take it in.

It happened with my Sonata a few times. Coworker would come in and say "do you know your trunk is open". Never did figure it out, so just assumed maybe I accidentally hit the button on the fob. I wouldn't doubt if your Forte uses the exact same fob.

I do believe there is a valet switch inside the trunk which makes it only work with the key.

Could test by wrapping the key fob in foil at night, or take the battery out and see if it stops it from popping open. If it stops it, there may be a problem with your key fob.

I did an experiment and hit the open trunk button on the fob while the key was in the ignition and it didn't open. But leaving a key in the ignition all night isn't an option!
