I was considering buying a AUDI Q5 this summer. I want the newer model which will launch in US this spring. Audi just finished its plant in Mexico and the newer Q5 will be built there.

Donald Trump Threatens BMW With Border Tax On Cars Built In Mexico | Fortune.com

How realistic is the 35% Tarrif? and How soon it will be implemented?

Is it better to buy the old model now or wait till summer? I would not be able to afford the new Q5 with 35% Tax but really prefer the new model.

Trump can't implant a 35% tariff on his own and Congress won't do it. At most he can only do 15% for 150 days max.

Civics lesson:

Who passes tariffs?

Who is currently president of the United States?

Who knows what Trump will or can do once he becomes president?

(Answers: Congress. The president can in war (but only congress can declare war), national emergency, or for national security purposes. Not present here. Barack Obama. God, and maybe psychics if any of them are not just charlatans)

The current administration has made an art of executive actions so there is precedent to take action from the WH. 35% may be a talking point while 10% may be a target. Companies with US plants like BMW, Hyundai, Toyota, etc. may get a break, but Audi does no manufacturing in the US and send a lot of cars from India.

Just speculation at this point.

Audi does not send cars from India to other markets. They build there to sell there.

The reason so many companies set up manufacturing in Mexico isn't to avoid the high cost of US or native country assembly. It's because Mexico has many more free trade agreements with other countries. By manufacturing in Mexico, the automakers can ship to most of South America duty free.

Stop listening to the faux news. Obama has issued fewer executive orders than any two term president since Ulysses S. Grant. There are substantial limits on what they can do with them too.

If Audi wants to sell it here, they can make the car at their Chattanooga plant in Tennessee. Not sure where you got the info it will be made in Mexico as Audi lists it in Ingostadt, Baveria and in India. Running the car in Tenn. is pretty easy considering the line they have there. All they would need are the parts. Considering that Audi only sells about 50,000 Q5 in the US annually, that's a drop in the bucket for most car makers. They may just take the Q5 and not sell it here at all. The F150 sells more in 2 weeks than the Q5 all year.

The idea here is that Trump wants the things we buy here, made here. Our Gov't has been giving our jobs away like candy. It's time we consider the American employee first and screw the rest of the world. They can dance to our music or sit the dance out.

Which such a protectionist stance is usually more of a democrat thing catering to unions and anti-capitalist. But then Trump was a registered Democrat until recently.

This is where i found that once fully operational Mexico will become sole source for Q5 production.

Stop listening to Huffington and MSNBC. Obama issued MORE exective orders than Bush 1 did and barely more than Bush 2. Obama has also had more EO overturned by the courts than any modern president.

Whatever EO the president issues is going to be the law until it's challenged in court. If Trump tries a 35% tax he'll probably get it...for a while.
